Kicheche Mara

Kenya

  • Attractive setting in a small wood with superb views out over the plains
  • High priority on social and environmental responsibility
  • Good option for big cat sightings
  • Fantastic guiding and hosting

Open:The camp is closed in April and May during the worst of the rains.

Location: Kicheche Mara Camp is in the Acacia Valley of Mara North Conservancy. The camp is a 20 minute game drive from Mara north airstrip, or about a 5 hour drive from Nairobi.

Rooms: There are 8 canvas tents. These are spacious and en-suite with proper beds, and a shower and flush loo. Triple and quadruple tents can be requested. The tents have solar lighting.

Activities: Wildlife game drives are the main activity for most guests. These are flexible, so you might want to do a couple of trips a day (morning and afternoon/evening) or you might prefer to take a picnic and stay out longer. Game drives are in open-sided, open-roofed Land Cruisers, shared with other guests. (Exclusive use of a vehicle can be requested, at extra cost). In addition to game drives you can take bush walks with an armed ranger. Should you want to extend your time out in the bush away from camp you could stay out in a fly camp (dome tents and a single bucket shower and toilet). This is at extra cost and should be requested in advance. Visits to local Maasai villages are also offered if you are keen to find out about local culture.

Facilities:There is a comfy lounge with a selection of reference books, playing cards and board games. You can charge cameras and videos etc at the charging station in the dining tent. There is a bar. A laundry service is provided within the price.

Dining:
There is a dining tent, but it is lovely to eat outside here if the weather is warm enough. Drinks are included with meals. Picnic breakfasts and lunches are provided for game drives if you are not coming back to camp for lunch.

Children: Children are welcome at the camp, however it is unfenced so adults must supervise children at all times. The camp has no baby equipment (eg high chairs, cots etc).

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication:
Mobile signals here can not be relied on and there is Wi-Fi in the lounge area.

Client Rating for Kenya 5/5 from 58 reviews

I will be coming back here. I loved it. The team are excellent, my guide was knowledgeable and friendly (with a real eye for the needs of a photographer), the tents are very comfortable indeed, and the food was some of the best I had on my trip. Couple all this with the fact that it is in the excellent Mara North conservancy, and this is a winning combination. All the Kicheche camps are slightly different yet high quality.
