Holiday review by Mr. David Walsh
Name: Mr. David Walsh
Date of trip: 21/04/2014
Number of people: 2
Swimming with cormorants, sea lions, penguins and sea turtles - all in the space of 10 minutes of Ferdinanda
Waking up every 10 minutes throughout the night when the refrigerators in the kitchens cut in
The days were great, the nights were terrible !
No issues with Tribes
Our guide (Giovanni) was pre-occupied with his camera, he spent most of 'our' holiday getting 'his' shots. He was rude to some French guests who were trying to translate his spiel to non-English speaking members of their party. he frequently allowed the group to spread out and would have been useless if anyone had tripped or fell on the lava fields. He also made it clear that he was not there to solve any problems, act as a go-between or do anything other than guiding. He disappeared after the nightly briefing which was only really a chance to tell everyone what shoes to ear the next day and didn't give out huge volumes of information. The guides on Archipel 2 which shadowed us around the islands were more interesting and animated bunch. I think he needs a refresher course to get his mojo back
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
Our trip did little for the communities on Isabella and Floreana though Puerto Ayora and Puerto Moreno certainly benefited as everything was re-stocked there.
The places you stayed
Safety and attentiveness of the crew was excellent. All trips to shore were well supervised and attention paid (by the boat crew) to people in the water during snorkelling. Food was either very good or practically inedible (the pork knuckles were a particular low point, as was the rubbery and inedible octopus, probably sourced from a toy shop). The common areas were good, sun deck excellent, DVDs available. Background boat noise was acceptable - but see my remarks about cabins.
