Deogarh Mahal

India

  • Deogarh Mahal

Located about halfway between Udaipur and Jodhpur, the small town of Deogarh is a good place to break a journey through Rajasthan and explore the Aruvali Hills.

The imposing palace was built in the 17th century for the Rawats of Deogarh, one of the most important families in Rajasthan. It was completely restored from ruins by the same family, who operate Deogarh Mahal as a heritage hotel. It is a rambling structure, with a total of 50 rooms and suites scattered amongst several wings.

Each room is individually decorated with period furnishings but also feature modern fittings such as air-conditioning or air cooling and en-suite bathrooms. Suites also have tea and cofee making facilities and minibars. The rooms and suites all vary in shape and size and are located throughout the building on various floors.

The hotel has two restaurants. Chandra Mahal is a large room with ornate decor serving Indian and international dishes. Surya Mahal offers an a la carte menu. Snacks are available by the pool and private meals, such as kebabs, can be served on terraces around the building. There is also a bar and a heated swimming pool. Two treatment rooms provide Ayurvedic Massages.

Deogarh is a colourful small town with a bustling market that is well worth exploring, and Deogarh Mahal can organise jeep safaris in the surrounding countryside or visits to nearby villages. A unique feature of Deogarh Mahal is the rural rail, travelling from Deogarh to Phulad through wooded hills on a restored 1930s era train.
