Best time to visit Bhutan

Weather conditions vary from location to location mainly according to elevation. In the north near the Tibetan border there is always snow. In the west, central and eastern regions the climate is similar to Europe. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit so far as the climate is concerned, but festivals take place throughout the year and you may want to plan your trip around one of these.

December to March: These are the dry winter months in Western Bhutan, which is the most popular area to visit as it includes Paro, Thimpu and Punakha. There is almost no rain here until March when there is just a little. Month by month this increases to a peak in about August. It can be very cold at nights during these months with regular frost, but days can be warm especially as you get into March.

April to May: Spring is a lovely time to visit Bhutan and is the best time to see wonderful wild flowers in blossom. This is where azaleas and rhododendrons come from as well as a host of other flora that we are accustomed to seeing in cultivated English gardens. It is still pretty dry in March through to Mid-April. And then the early summer showers continue through to June.

June to August: The heaviest rains start in late June and peak in August. This is the monsoon season and the more sub-tropical south of Bhutan, bordering India, bears the brunt of the rains, heat and humidity at this time, though it affects the whole country to a lesser degree.

September to November: Autumn follows the rainy season and starts around late September or early October. It is again a good time to visit. Temperatures are comfortable and it’s good for trekking. Days are often clear, bright and sunny while nights can be chilly. Early snow can start in the higher elevations. From late November it becomes very cold and there can be snow and high winds especially on the high passes between the valleys and areas above 3,000 metres.
