Where to go on holiday in September

September is often a great time to escape on holiday as the schools have gone back so things are a little quieter, from mid-month flight prices tend to become less pricey, and it is one of those in-between months when you could plan for a bit of 'me' time before winter hits Europe. We have lots of suggestions for you, and if nothing is quite right, call us for a chat as we've got lots more ideas.

My trip was a blast. Everything was perfectly set up and went off without a hitch. This was my first time working with this company and I will say I was a little nervous, but I had nothing to worry about. Everything was perfectly planned and executed! It was an amazing trip to Botswana.

Best places to go on holiday in September

Africa

Highlights of where to go on holiday in September in Africa:

  • Wildlife viewing in Botswana at this time can be extraordinary as it’s very dry. Chobe is particularly good for the thousands of elephants that are drawn for miles away for the permanent river. Carmine bee-eaters and other migrants begin to return. It’s still a good time for wild dog spotting. Water levels in the Delta start to drop.
  • September is a wonderful time to head for the wilderness in Namibia. Sand dunes, wildlife, wild coast, fascinating cultures . . . it’s a brilliant country. It’s cold at night and in the mornings, but days are sunny and warm.
  • In Madagascar, wildlife viewing is good … but book early. It’s peak season in Madagascar so you need to book in good time as there are limited good places to stay and they get quickly booked up for September. The tropical beaches are looking good too!
  • Malawi offers some good wildlife and beach holidays. September is still the dry season in Malawi. This month is the start of the best time for diving and snorkelling in Lake Malawi. It’s one of the best months for wildlife viewing in parks such as Liwonde and Majete.
  • Rwanda and Uganda are dry. Excellent great birding, general wildlife, gorilla and chimp trekking.
  • South Africa: September is winter in Kruger and the days are dry and warm, with cold evenings and mornings. It’s a great time for wildlife viewing here as well as in KwaZulu Natal’s Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, and Madikwe in the northwest. In the Cape, near Hermanus, it is peak whale season with sightings most days. Spring in the Cape (mid-August to mid-October) is wonderful for flowers, especially the fynbos.
  • In Tanzania and Kenya, many great East African reserves and more are at their peak from July to October: the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Nyerere (Selous) …  The annual wildebeest migration is in northern Serengeti, Tanzania, and in Kenya’s Masai Mara.
For something unusual, consider the very remote Katavi, and see chimps in Mahale … amazing.
The mainland beaches plus those of the Indian Ocean islands of Zanzibar, Mafia, Lamu, Fanjove and others are a good choice in July.
  • In Zambia, South Luangwa, Kafue, Lower Zambezi and all the excellent reserves here are in peak season for superb wildlife viewing from July to roughly the end of October. The Busanga swamps in Kafue are accessible now. Carmine bee-eaters are arriving back in numbers. It’s getting very hot.
  • In Zimbabwe in September and October, temperatures start to increase, reaching their peak in October. It is an excellent time for game viewing as wildlife tends to congregate around the waterholes. September to November is the best time for fishing in Zimbabwe, particularly if you are after a tigerfish.
  • In Mozambique, as well as great beaches, you can see humpback whales in the south from about June to September, and from about August to October in the north.
  • Mauritius is good most of the year, with May to December being the best months. Excellent beaches. It’s warm but not too humid in September.

Latin America

Highlights of where to go on holiday in September in Latin America:

  • September is a good month for most experiences in Peru. The claylicks in the rainforest are attracting parrots, macaws and parakeets in good numbers from August to October.
  • The Galapagos Islands offer a year-round wildlife spectacle that is hard to beat. This is the peak of the drier, cooler season and sealions and penguins tend to be very active around September. Combine this with time to explore the Ecuador mainland to see the wildlife of the Amazonian rainforest plus the Andean regions with Andean markets and haciendas.
  • September is a great month for spotting wild jaguars in Brazil‘s Pantanal (June to October). Combine the Pantanal with the Amazon for an incredible wildlife experience. Good time for hyacinth macaws, and even maned wolves in a particular camp. It is also a popular month to visit the beaches of Salvador and the northeast.  August to October is also peak season for southern right whales in Santa Catarina.
  • Titicaca, Amazon rainforest, Andean mountains and salt lakes are all waiting for you in Bolivia.

Indian Subcontinent

Highlights of where to go on holiday in September in India, Nepal or Bhutan:

  • From June to September India is mostly hot and humid and the main monsoon starts in the southwest and heads northwards through central India reaching the north in July. Most national parks are closed. India’s southeast remains mostly dry in these months.
  • In Bhutan, it’s the time of summer festivals beginning and lush greenery. It will be raining though, so if you come you need to be prepared for that.
