Where to go on holiday in March

Travel can open our hearts and minds, allow us to relax and find ourselves, stretch us through learning new things, challenge us physically, give us understanding . . . sometimes the journey can be in our backyards, but sometimes the wider world beckons us.

We walked with the Warriors to the hilltop with the sun setting on one side and the full moon rising on the other. We were met by our guide and welcomed with drinks and a fire. The Warriors danced and sang their tribal chants as we watched and then joined in. It was a true honour to be in their presence. We loved this and will hold this memory close to our hearts.

Best places to go on holiday in March

Africa

Highlights of where to go on holiday in March in Africa:

  • South Africa’s Cape has Mediterranean-type weather in February (actually from about October to March). Head for Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route. It is also a good time for exploring, hiking and other activities in the Cape. Relax on beaches, enjoy fine food and gorgeous scenery.
KwaZulu Natal in the east of the country also has pretty good weather, so walks, cycling, horse riding and other activities would be excellent here in February. Combine with some beach time or a safari for an exciting African adventure.
  • February is excellent for birding in southern Africa as it is the green season from roughly December to March and birds love this wetter time of year.
  • Botswana and Zambia offer great value in the green season, with lodges charging at greatly reduced prices in comparison to the peak season.
  • In Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, Robin Pope Safaris offer their wonderful ‘River Journeys‘ from mid-January to the end of March.
  • The annual wildebeest migration is in the southern Serengeti in Tanzania from January to March.
  • It is the dry season in Kenya and Tanzania, so great for game viewing. The coastlines are enjoying good warm sunny weather too so a try break on an Indian Ocean island such as Lamu, Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, Chole …. Safari and beach holiday anyone?
  • Victoria Falls is a sight worth seeing any time of year, but February is good as it’s coming up to it’s peak flow (roughly February to May). You’ll get a good view of it from either the Zambian or Zimbabwean side.
  • You can climb Kilimanjaro all year. January and February are two of the best months to climb the mountain as the weather tends to be quite clear. If Kili is a little too much of a challenge, talk to us about other hikes (perhaps in the Ngorongoro region or Kenya’s Loita Hills), or maybe a Maasai-guided walking safari.

Latin America

Highlights of where to go on holiday in March in Latin America:

  • There’s never a bad time to visit the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, but March 21st is the beginning of the summer equinox and signals the return of the first albatrosses to Espanola Island. Also, frigatebirds start mating on San Cristobal and Genovesa.
  • March is a good time for wildlife viewing in Costa Rica, and then there are adventures such as horse riding, cycling … and of course, excellent beaches on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of the country.
  • This is a good month to travel around Ecuador whatever your focus. It’s a small country but with some amazing highlights in the Andes, the rainforest and the Galapagos Islands. Take a look at some of our suggested holidays here.
  • Iguazu Falls on the border between Argentina and Brazil are still an awesome sight as the vast volume of water drops into the canyon.
  • March is early autumn in Patagonia in both Chile and Argentina. It’s a great time to try trekking for pumas. Both of these countries also have so much more to offer than just Patagonia, though, so definitely worth checking out for March.
  • In the Antarctic, February remains quite mild and by March, with summer ending, it becomes colder often below freezing. Both months offer good chances of spotting whales.
  • Brazil’s beaches in Rio or on the Costa Verde are great for some winter sun. It is the rainy season so you will see rain, but it’s hot and doesn’t rain all of the time.

Indian Subcontinent

Highlights of where to go on holiday in March in India, Nepal or Bhutan:

  • If you are fine with relatively high temperatures, consider Kerala and Goa for a beach holiday. Average temperatures tend to be in the mid-30s°c but they can go higher.
  • March is a superb time for wildlife viewing in India and Nepal. It’s hot, hot, hot, but that means the wildlife are forced to head for waterholes and the grasses are at their lowest. If you can stand the heat, it’s one of the very best months for tiger viewing in India or Nepal.
  • March is a good time for an adventure in the higher regions of India and Nepal. And one of the more unusual and special adventures you could have this month is trekking in search of snow leopards.
  • If you just want to give yourself some ‘me’ time after winter, why not try a spa break in the Himalayan foothills at the wonderful Ananda in the Himalayas.
