Best places to go in February

Africa

Highlights of where to go on holiday in February in Africa:

  • The annual wildebeest migration is in the southern Serengeti in Tanzania from January to March. By February the southern Serengeti plains will be alive with newborns, but predators are never far away.  Nyerere (Selous) in southern Tanzania is also good at this time.
  • It is the dry season in Kenya and Tanzania, so great for game viewing. The coastlines are enjoying good warm sunny weather too so a try break on an Indian Ocean island such as Lamu, Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, Chole …. Safari and beach holiday anyone?
  • February is excellent for birding in southern Africa as it is the green season from roughly December to March and birds love this wetter time of year.
  • Botswana and Zambia offer great value in the green season, with lodges charging at greatly reduced prices in comparison to the peak season.
  • Botswana’s Makgadikgadi and Nxai salt pans are witness to thousands of zebra and wildebeest on the new grasses, along with attendant predators.
  • South Africa’s Cape has Mediterranean-type weather in February (actually from about October to March). Head for Cape Town, the Winelands, and the Garden Route. It is also a good time for exploring, hiking and other activities in the Cape. Relax on beaches, enjoy fine food and gorgeous scenery.
KwaZulu Natal in the east of the country also has pretty good weather, so walks, cycling, horse riding and other activities would be excellent here in February. Combine with some beach time or a safari for an exciting African adventure.
  • Victoria Falls is a sight worth seeing any time of year, but February is good as it’s coming up to it’s peak flow (roughly February to May). You’ll get a good view of it from either the Zambian or Zimbabwean side.
  • You can climb Kilimanjaro all year. January and February are two of the best months to climb the mountain as the weather tends to be quite clear. If Kili is a little too much of a challenge, talk to us about other hikes (perhaps in the Ngorongoro region or Kenya’s Loita Hills), or maybe a Maasai-guided walking safari.
  • February is also a good time to trek to see gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda.

Indian Subcontinent

Highlights of where to go on holiday in February in India, Nepal or Bhutan:

  • February is one of the very best months for wildlife viewing in India and Nepal.
  • Since the rains have stopped and the grasses have died down but the intense heat is yet to come, February is a very good month for tiger viewing in India or Nepal.
  • February is one of the best months for seeing rhinos in Kaziranga National Park in northeast India. You’ll also see wild elephants, hoolock gibbons and other such interesting wildlife here.
  • Kerala and Goa are the places to hit the beach in India this month. There are some lovely hotels and lodges, the weather in February is in the mid-20s°c, and you can find some great beaches and good food.
  • February is a good time for an adventure. Take to the hills on an Annapurna trek in Nepal, or perhaps explore the authentic Nila region in northern Kerala.

Latin America

Highlights of where to go on holiday in February in Latin America:

  • February is a good time for wildlife viewing in Costa Rica, and then there are adventures such as horse riding, cycling … and of course, excellent beaches on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of the country.
  • This is a good month to travel around Ecuador whatever your focus. It’s a small country but with some amazing highlights in the Andes, the rainforest and the Galapagos Islands. Take a look at one of our suggested holidays here.
  • In the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, February brings the nesting times of greater flamingos on Floreana Island, marine iguanas on Santa Cruz, and the Galapagos dove. The seas tend to be clear now so the snorkelling is good.
  • Iguazu Falls on the border between Argentina and Brazil are always impressive but they really are spectacular in February due to the extra volume thundering over the cliffs.
  • Patagonia in both Chile and Argentina is a great choice in February as it’s a warmer time to visit these chilly southern regions of South America. Both of these countries also have so much more to offer than just Patagonia, though, so definitely worth checking out for February.
  • In the Antarctic, February remains quite mild and by March, with summer ending, it becomes colder often below freezing. Both months offer good chances of spotting whales.
  • Brazil’s beaches in Rio or on the Costa Verde are great for some winter sun. It is rainy season so you will see rain, but it’s hot and doesn’t rain all of the time.
