I am sure the other guides from Hoopoe are very good but Muro was so good in all aspects, he ensured the safari was even more special than we had expected. Africa came alive even more when he spoke about his love of what he does, his tribe, the country and his family. The Kirirumu camp at Ndutu was magical, set amongst the trees, with animals (giraffe and elephant) seen within 200 metres of the camp. Sitting with binoculars outside our tent just watching Impala and the birds was a delight. Pongwee Beach Hotel proved to be the ideal place to relax. We had planned to visit the Colobus monkeys, visit Stone Town and go on a spice tour but all that went out the window within the first 24 hours of arricing at Pongwe.
A great experience for us both and especially for my wife who was visiting sub-Saharan Africa for the first time. The camps were very good and the itinerary worked very well for our needs, with the right balance betwwen the safari experience and laying on a beach. The hotel proposed by David was exactly what we asked for, quiet, relaxing authentic with great food and staff, and I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to really relax after a busy, tiring but exhilerating safari.
When I rang and spoke to Dave I had already worked with a couple of larger operators but I was very impressed by how he listened to what I was after and then produced options I hade not considered. I would recommend Tribes (I already have) to anyone wantiung to tailor a personal experience. Dave also had to put up with my tweaking the holiday endlessly BUT he remained patient and delivered big time.
Our guide, Muro, was fantastic in all aspects. Very responsive to anything we asked and his knowledge was excellent, not just with the "big" animals but also the plants, birds and smaller animals. We both felt very safe with him driving at all times despite the conditions being very wet at times. He was also very personable, with a gentle manner that made us both feel very comfortable with him.
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
Always hard to be specific but I liked the ethos of Tribes and their partner companies, particularly the local agent, and the attitude to the places we visited and the ecology of our world.
The places you stayed
Staff friendly and lodge very comfortable. Food was not as good as Ndutu camp but still good. Good place to stop for a first night in Tanzania.
Serengeti National Park
Our favourite of the camps. Great, friendly staff. Very good food. Lovely location
I can fault nothing at this hotel. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Hope the owners contract their chef again as the food he and his team produced was excellent. Accommodation struch exactly the right note between authentic and luxury.
