The amazing wildlife and the scenery it was breathtaking sometimes. The volcano early in the morning with the tip in the cloud. The most amazing view of SAN Jose at night from the Xandari, the hatching of the turtles on the beach in a Tamarindo and all the different coloured Macau parrots flying around in a roadside cafe stop on our way to the beach and finally waking up with the sound of the sea and the howler monkeys!
We fell in love with Costa Rica. Such a diverse country.
Everywhere is so clean, the people are welcoming and we felt very safe.
It exceed our expectations and we would definitely return to one day.
Without Anita’s help we would not have been able to put this tour together. She understood our brief and the type of hotels we wished to stay in and delivered us an excellent, well managed holiday. We just turned at the required time and someone was there to meet us - perfect.
All the hotels were in great locations with all our rooms taking advantage of the best views.
Without exception all our guides where very good, knowledgeable and helpful. Eliar in Monteverde was truly exceptional and showed us many animals in Santa Elena that we would not have noticed so much so we booked to go on the night tour! Jorge in Arenal took us on a fabulous tour of the Hanging bridges and gave a fascinating insight into the flora, fauna and ecosystem of the jungle. The drivers where all competent and we felt very safe with them. We also used Sansa air on a couple of internal flights and they were very professional. And we had amazing aerial views of the country.
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
There was no plastic on the beach and their was constant reminders of saving water ie not having new towels everyday and requesting change of bedsheets and to turn off the electricity when you left your rooms.
As you can drink the tap water most rooms had either a glass carafe of water or a bottle that you refilled.
The places you stayed
From the moment Gabriel checked us in this hotel was a dream. The grounds for such a small hotel where extensive, beautifully maintained and included the most fantastic waterfalls. It also commands the best view of SAN Jose from breakfast to dinner in the open fronted dining room. The hotel is small and personal and the staff are a delight. Oscar introduced us to Guaro sours the best in Costa Rica. On opening our doors to the room you are just blown away with the size and comfort though it did take a little getting use to a shower that felt as if you were showering outside with its view of your own private courtyard. The large terrace gave 180 degree views over the mountains and San Jose which could also be viewed from the bed and sitting area.
The sunset pool took a bit of an hike to but was worth every step
Much larger more American than the. Xandari but the staff were very helpful and pleasant. There was nothing better than a pina colada in the springs at dusk.
Our rooms were perfectly formed in a great location that was quiet and had the most magnificent views of the volcano
We were there fo4 NYEve and they put on a great party with the most energetic dancers accompanied by loud drummers that really saw in the new decade followed by fireworks that was spectacular and lasted about 15 minutes
Do try the pizza from the wood fired oven
I shall start with its best attributes. The food in the main restaurant was excellent the breakfast in the room on the hill was mediocre however this is not a hotel where you can expect to eat and drink into the night. At 21.15 the lights in the restaurant went out and the bar closed at 20:30 .
Make sure you have warm clothes tracksuit etc as the hotel is cold due to its elevated position and no heating in the rooms. The bedrooms are a good size with excellent views over the forest. The bathrooms are small and would benefit from a hot towel rail To warm the damp cold towels.
The rooms would have benefited from tea and coffee making facilities. Especially as they were not available after your evening meal.
We did find an excellent restaurant in a Santa Elena called Morphos after the butterfly and the taxi was $10
