Taj Mahal at sunset & dawn the next day. The colours, history & cities of Rajastan. Keoladeo nature reserve recommend by Americans we met at Fort Bali which we visited in a tonga instead of going to Fatepur Sikri. Betswar has 21 temples on the sacred Yamuna River & was extraordinary, Chambal River Lodge arranged for a boat trip & access to an old haveli they own to see the sunset during a sacred festival.
India is demanding on all senses so it was good to mix cities with rural visits
Paul put together a superb schedule with great hotels.
We had Minto as our driver for 3 weeks. We always felt safe with him.
The guides were good & responsive to our interests, thy spoke English but a couple were quite hard to understand & we tended to read up before visting specific sights
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
Rubbish is a real problem in India. We were given a lot of plastic water bottles - the Jaipur hotel & Chambal River Lodge were the only places trying to use re-usable bottles.
The places you stayed
V good food.
Helpful when we needed a delayed check out while suffering a bit of a bad tummy & storing some luggage between visits.
It does take nearly an hour to get there from the airport through the traffic.
The smog in Delhi was dreadful, I am not sure how healthy eating on the roof is now. We both came back with bad chests & I feel anyone with asthma or chest problems should be there for the shortest possible time
Absolutely stunning with beautiful roof top swimming pool & bar.
Also good to be able to walk out of the hotel into the city as Dewali was happening
The approach through the village is not great but once inside the fort it is great & a good place to recuperate with yoga mats, a small but clean pool & excursions to see birds at dawn & ride round the village on a bullock cart. A/c wasnt very effective but we opened windows. Wiring looked a bit dodgey but worked ok. The food was local & tasty.
It felt at the heart of the village & an authentic place
Super staff & charming host - Durgha Singh. Traditional puppet show in the courtyard & board game in the courtyard garden, large room beautifully furnished. A haven of peace in busy Jaipur
Fine but soulless & v western. In some ways the familiarity was relief but it could have been any where in the world! Good for getting to the taj easily. Poor air in Agra
A joy. Staff, owners & guide a delight. Great village walk. It is a 30 min drive to Chambal national park But close to Bateswar which is fascinating - the camel fair was over but it was having a religious festival & the owner, Anu, encouraged us to go to see the sadhus & 21 temples on the Yamuna. again, a good place to re-balance & rest
Large room & good library
