Many thanks to Alex Neaves who was he sole reason we booked with Tribes. I hadn't heard of the company before, found you on the internet then spoke with Alex. He was relaxed and friendly, happy to talk to me for ages about my requirements and his knowedge (extensive) of Costa Rica. His 3 personal itinerary suggestions we were glad we included; the internal flight to Torteguero, self drive the rest of the holiday and finishing at Tamarindo rather than Manuel Antonio. I had itineraries compiled from several companies including a couple we'd used before but Alex was the only one who was happy to just email it to me and left me read it myself and get back to him in my time with questions. The rest insisted on talking me through it before sending. When working this was a time consuming process (15-20 mins) and quite irritating.
Well done Alex, I felt confident in him from the start. The power of good customer service!
We didn't have a personal guide but we were booked on to small group tours during the holiday. Rainforest, canopy walks, volcano and coffee/chocolate production. We were impressed with all the guides. They were knowledgeable and keen to share this with us. The rainforest guides were particularly good. Mawamba (biologist Stephen) and the guide at La Selva, Sarapiqui
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
Here in the UK we could learn a few things about recycling, respecting each other and the environment. All demonstrated in Costa Rica, where locals took their environment and looking after it very seriously
The places you stayed
Great food, lovely rooms, ours had a lovely balcony with views across the gardens and tree tops. Slightly quirky /boutique décor which we love. Great setting and helpful staff
The environment necessitates a certain basicness about the accommodation which we accept. I think all the Lodges were perhaps similar. Mawamba has the advantage of being situated so you can walk on the beach and to the village. Our cabin was clean. Running water was cold but in the heat this didn't matter.
The only thing we didn't like much was the communal eating. Food average. The rainforest and hotel staff and guides were excellent and made up for the slight niggles
A larger hotel. The restaurant area we found a bit modern and functional, not much character to it. They had happy hour but no proper bar area to drink in. The food was good, not exceptional. However our v nice cabin was situated on the edge of the hotel against the rainforest (good trail through) and we loved sitting on the balcony with good views to watch the many birds and monkeys passing by
Lovely small hotel, with character and charm. Great friendly staff. Great restaurant food and we enjoyed a first floor room with balcony so we could sit out and wildlife spot when we had a few minutes free. Would recommend this
We loved this hotel. Great location on the beach. Staff were exceptional in ensuring everything was ok on an ongoing basis ( management staff chatted to all guests casually during breakfast to tease out any niggles). We didn't have any!
We had a ground flour room with private seating area outside. Gardens lovely and well maintained. Many resident animals and birds. -When the iguana gets in the pool everyone else gets out! Short walk on the beach or road into Tamarindo (cheap taxi at night) which we also loved. Many places to eat and the hotel staff were there with recommendations. Sea beautiful and warm. Waves great for body boarding or surfing. The hotel also has kayaks and a local island to paddle to. Would definitely recommend
