Probably the wildlife moments; seeing whale dolpins seals on way over to Robben Island; penguins Boulders beach; huge pod dolphins easily seen from the beach at Plettenburg bay; wildlife on safari drives The food...amazing and excellent value for money. The wine tasting using the Wine Tram at Franshoek..great fun in some beautiful settings. The amazing coastine views...we had the most amazing room at Views Boutique, sipping some fizz watching sun go down over the Indian Ocean and white pristine beach.
We loved every minute of exploring this diverse and interesting country. It would be impossible to identify one specific highlight as every day gave something different. The itinerary gave us the opportunity to see so many different environments of the Cape from city to deserts to rainforest seeing lots of wildlife along the way.
We chose Tribes as we had had a very positive experience with the company with previous trips to Africa.. We were not disappointed this time. Sinead was very helpful in sorting out our itinerary. The Vamoos app was useful but we still feel a printed copy is so useful so you can add your own notes etc alongside.
We stayed in Kariega game reserve for 4 nights. We had Wilmie as our guide, she was lovely, extremely knowleagable and we learnt a lot about the environment, the fauna and flora. She also coped well with the British sense of humour!
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
Unsure really. There is still a lot of plastic in use, particulalry water bottles (Kariega was the worst). There was a ongoing drought apparently but there was no evidence in terms of water useage. We had electricity cuts on occasions due to problems with their supply (Franshoek).
The places you stayed
Charles and Dominique were great hosts in this charming Guest House with a good location for exploring Cape Town. They were a mine of information and helped us to sort out our activities, ordered taxis recommending places to eat etc. All staff very friendly and would definately stay there again. Breakfasts were fantastic! We learnt a lot about the political climate too from Charles so it was most interesting.
We found the freecitywalks..very good..check website. we did the Historic city walk and the Bokaap walk.
Much cheaper accomodation but great value for money. We were lucky to have a room with beautiful view. The food was average in comparison to elsewhere -tea & coffee tasted awful for some reason!
We found Oatshorn unattractive. The Meerkat experience was chaotically organised. We were up at 4.45am to ensure we arrived at the venue by 5.30am - we were suprised we had to drive 10 mins to the location. We waited around for almost an hour there before we were told to drive to another site to see the meerkats. It was the most expensive event of the holiday and not good value. However the Meerkats were lovely to see!
Again a very friendly atmospheric place to stay with a good location. We had a free wine tasting session with Shanon, who then gave us a personal tasting the following night to demonstrate the importance of glass shape affecting the taste...who knew the same wine would taste different in a different shaped wine glass!!
Food was superb and we ate there two nights out of the three.
Very friendly helpful staff. Disappointed there was only one room facing the river. However the main area had lots of seating with wonderful views. We were disappointed at the lack of wildlife on the river however. It is estuarine so no mammals in the water nor coming to drink. Suprisingly few birds also. Was lovely it was small..only 20 guests unlike the Main lodge which caters for over a hundred guests. We had very good experiences of wildlife sightings on the drives, altho very few small mammals in the area. It is very hilly so lots of bumpy rides.
Food was ok.
