Holiday review by Stephen Robinson

Name: Stephen Robinson

Date of trip: 10/10/2018

Number of people: 2

Watching a sloth slowly cross the road - in itself a bit unusual - with traffic halted and people watching but being very respectful and careful. Whilst snorkelling having a 6ft white tip shark approach us from behind and pass within a couple of feet in such a calm, unhurried way that we did not feel fearful in any way. Sitting having a drink around a roaring fire in Monteverde.

Tribes Overall:

We would recommend Costa Rica to anyone - it's a wonderful country with diverse geography, flora and fauna of which the Costa Ricans, who themselves are warm, friendly and courteous, are rightly proud. Not one thing went wrong on the holiday - the hotels were fantastic, everything was on time and all tours / arrangements were superb. It all exceeded our expectations. We went in the off season during one of the rainiest months but had plenty of sun and most places were pretty empty so we were lucky to have mostly undivided attention. All in all one of the best, if not the best, holidays we have ever been on.

Tribes Service:

Can't fault Paul at all. Extremely helpful and shouldered the organisational burden for us so all we had to do was sit back, relax and turn up on time. Just what we wanted. He delivered a holiday that really exceeded our expectations. The Vamoos App was also really helpful and a very nice touch.

Guides:

Pura Vida as the Costa Ricans would say. The guides were very knowledgeable - not the rote knowledge that you sometimes get - and were obviously very interested in what they were doing. They were all at pains to ensure we got the most out of our time and were very helpful indeed. Everything was very punctual and roads and driving good.

Social & Environmental Responsibility:

The Costa Ricans were honest and happy to talk openly about themselves and their country - good and bad - and at no point made us feel unwelcome in any way whatsoever; in fact quite genuinely the opposite. They were proud their country was an environmental leader and were happy to show it to us in a very respectful and controlled way. We really respect that and came away wiser.

The places you stayed

Rooftop of Hotel Presidente, San Jose, Costa Rica © Hotel Presidente

Hotel Presidente

San Jose

Only stayed one night for a short time but was ideal for what we needed.

Cabin at Evergreen Lodge in Tortuguero, Costa Rica © AGMarks

Evergreen Lodge

Tortuguero National Park

The lodges in the forest were fantastic with laid on humming birds, butterflies, howler monkeys and colourful frogs. Loved that we could only get there by boat.

Pool at Lomas del Volcan, Arenal, Costa Rica © Fotokoky

Lomas del Volcan

Arenal

A wonderful wooden cottage with veranda that looked onto the volcano. We watched toucan and humming birds from there. The closest hotel to the volcano by all accounts. The staff were superb and we had the best steak ever.

The bar at Monteverde Lodge

Monteverde Lodge and Gardens

Costa Rica

We were two of only four guests so had undivided attention. Wonderful views of the forest from the room and a great balcony. The gardens were amazing and the pool was fantastic. Being the only people in the pool in lovely sunshine with toucans and spider monkeys in the surrounding trees was a stand out moment.
