The highlight was the final 'chillout' location we chose on the Osa Peninsular.
We went to Costa Rica mainly to see the abundance of diverse wildlife / flora and fauna. We did see a lot of different species - though often only through the lens of a powerful bird-spotting telescope. We were confined to well-cordoned tourist trails and most of the birds were very high up in the canopy. We found Monteverde disappointing in this respect. Osa / Corcovado national park on the other hand was just the opposite as the trails were much more 'part of the forest'. We saw an abundance of birds and wildlife at low level and without needing a telescope in both Arenal and Osa.
Tribes Travel in the UK was helpful and always happy to discuss any concerns/ decisions we needed to make prior to the holiday. However, in two of the locations we went to (Arenal and Osa Peninsula) he was unable to find us accommodation suited to our budget. We arranged these ourselves in the end (see below). Also, due to the demise of Nature Air soon before our departure our internal flight was changed, with the result that our final printed itinerary was incorrect. Tribes did however make sure that our internal flights were secured and gave us useful advice regarding baggage allowances.
Swiss Travel handled the logistics locally in CR and were very good; all transfers and pickups were comfortable, on time and efficient.
TRIBES RESPONSE: We do work with a enormous range of accommodation in Costa Rica, but we do only work with hotels that we or our local colleagues in Costa Rica know well and can offer a personal recommendation on so can not work with every accommodation in the country.
All guides were enthusiastic, helpful and informative. They were ready to answer all of our questions and went to great lengths to find and explain all the flora and fauna. All drivers were pleasant and drove carefully. We were not warned about the poor condition of the road under construction between San Jose and Monteverde which was an extremely uncomfortable ride.
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
Every guide we had told us about the strenuous efforts being made to route the profits from tourism towards conservation activities. For this reaosn, we were surprised that plastic bags and drinking straws were offered freely at every hotel/ shop.
The places you stayed
Only stayed there as a first night stopover, but a lovely hotel with good food and stunning views over San Jose
Disappointing. This hotel was suggested by Tribes, but only on our request for a cheaper hotel than the one they originally suggested so perhaps it was our own fault! The hotel looked lovely in the pictures - and had a great location, half a mile from the entrance to the cloud forest park - but the room was dark and had a very limited view, and the food was very average. The room was cold (though admittedly the outside temp was only 15-20C at the time) and we had to ask for a space heater in the room! We got wet and cold outdoors and could not dry anything in the room. The towels also stayed wet. So that probably coloured our opinion.
