Sloth crossing the road and when we stopped a driver coming from the opposite direction stopped and lifted it by the scruff of the neck and put it under a tree on the opposite side. Magic. The Jaguar Sanctuary at Playa Cocles is outstanding - how often do you see a basket full of baby sloths, capuchin monkeys, anteaters walking around and very knowledgeable guides. Bahia del Sol is a beautiful hotel; peaceful, located on a great beach - encourage people to walk north and visit Playa La Penca - a deserted, white sand beach about 25 mins walk away. Alert people to the fact that the Pacific coast, which caters for American/Canadian tourism is expensive - you pay American prices but standards of food etc are very good. A week at the end to relax was brilliant; encourage people to extend their stay and transfer directly to San Jose from Bahia del Sol - a straightforward 4 hour journey - rather than miss a day on the beach by returning to Alta Hotel for the last night.
All arrangements were in place and on time, beyond our expectations. The local ground handler was proactive - they called us when the transfer from Alta to Cariblue was held up in traffic - and utterly reliable.
Great help from Paul who met our demands and got the room upgrades on the dates we wanted. Personal and helpful service.
Every driver was on time, in a comfortable van with ac and most full of knowledge of the local area. They were able to take us to lunch stops that were good value, typical of the area and great fun. One in particular, Sasha, who took us on the second half of the journey from San Jose to Puerto Viejo, was excellent and he had outstanding English. We learned so much from him.
Social & Environmental Responsibility:
We enjoyed private transfers throughout but would have willingly shared these with others.
The places you stayed
Beautiful colonial style hotel; room service very good. Excellent first night stop.
Great rooms (superior) and basically in a jungle. We were lucky to have great weather after 3 weeks of storms so Cahuita snorkelling was excellent. Unique part of the country, different to everywhere else. Ganja is prevalent!! White sand beaches at Cahutia. If we had more time we would have taken a taxi to the town and walked to these lovely beaches, a short walk from town.
Beautiful rooms and grounds. Best for bird life. Howler monkeys woke us in the adjacent tree at 0530 - but brilliant nonetheless. Restaurant hit and miss and pricey. Lots to do in the area. On reflection, could have spent a third night here and done more.
The only criticism would be the breakfast service, whilst always friendly and well-intentioned was, at times, haphazard eg coffee before juice, orders not right. But we always got there in the end. Beautiful grounds.
