Rovos Rail

Day 1

Arrive Pretoria

Your holiday begins as you touch down at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg. After clearing customs and collecting your bags, step through the doors and one of our representatives will be there to meet you and drive you to your beautiful boutique hotel just outside Pretoria. You can spend the day relaxing by the pool, enjoying views from the terrace, catching up on sleep or you may choose to explore Pretoria, the city of Jacarandas. The hotel offers excellent international cuisine which can be preceded by drinks on the terrace as you overlook the city.

Day 2

Depart Pretoria

Enjoy a hearty breakfast and then join fellow guests on the short transfer to the Rovos Rail pre-departure lounge at Pretoria station. Exclusive to Rovos Rail guests, the beautifully furnished lounge is a foretaste of the opulence of the train itself. You'll board the train in the early afternoon, ahead of the 3 pm departure. As the train pulls out of the station you can watch the scenery from the privacy of your suite, later heading to one of the lounges to meet other passengers. At 7 pm you'll hear the gong that herald's dinner. Savour the chef's fine creations and sip a glass of delicious South African wine. By the time you get back to your suite the bed will have been prepared, ready for a good night's sleep.

Day 3

Kimberley Excursion

After breakfast you'll have the chance to take a tour of Kimberley, once the best known diamond mining centre in the world. Your tour takes in the Big Hole, the site of the open mine, and the museum where you'll learn how the rough diamonds are transformed into highly prized gems. You'll be back on board the train in time for lunch. Sit back and watch the ever-changing scenery from the observation car this afternoon, pausing for tea and cake. Later there's time to shower and change for dinner - formal attire is the norm in the evening, so this is a good chance to show off your finery!

Day 4

Arrive Cape Town

The train stops at Matjiesfontein, a small village at the edge of the Great Karoo, were you have a chance to stretch your legs. With its fine Victorian buildings, walking around the village is like stepping back in time. In the mid-morning the train begins the final leg of the journey, heading to Cape Town via Worcester. Admire the fine scenery, take tea in the observation car and enjoy your elegant surroundings. The train is scheduled to arrive at Cape Town at 6pm this evening, where your wonderful rail trip concludes.
