Northern Mozambique Holiday

Day 1

Arrive Nampula, Transfer To Mozambique Island

Welcome to Mozambique! A representative will meet you at Nampula airport and drive you east to the coast, where you'll cross the 3km bridge over to Mozambique Island. The journey takes around 2½ hours. Your destination is Terraco das Quitandas, a 300 year old mansion converted to a guest house. Settle into your air-conditioned room then wander down to the lounge and reading room where you can relax after your journey, maybe enjoying a drink from the honesty bar. You should head up to the rooftop terrace in the late afternoon to watch the sunset. Tonight take the short walk into town to select a restaurant for dinner.

Day 2

On Mozambique Island

You have a day to explore Mozambique Island. Enjoy a generous breakfast at the lodge as you decide how spend your time. The island has an interesting history as a Portuguese trading centre on the route to India. You might like to take a tour to the main sites as you learn about this colourful past from your guide. Alternatively you can explore independently, visiting the museum and fort, and strolling round the alleyways. When you've had your fill of sightseeing, return to Terraco to enjoy its quiet seclusion, take in some sun on the terrace or rest in the shaded central courtyard.

Day 3

Transfer To Nuarro Lodge

After breakfast today you'll set off with your driver for the journey north to Nuarro Lodge. The drive will take around 4 hours, and you'll be able to stop along the way whenever you like. The lodge is set on a lovely bay on the photogenic Baixo do Pinda Peninsula and is named after the rocky point at one end of the bay. It's a small lodge with just 12 chalets, and friendly staff who make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive. Unpack your bags and make yourself at home - you are spending the next 5 days here. This afternoon you can check out the beach bar as you meet other guests and settle into the gentle pace of life at Nuarro.

Day 5

At Nuarro Lodge

Another day dawns at Nuarro, full of possibilities. You might like to walk along to Nanatha village accompanied by a member of staff from the lodge. There are strong links between Nuarro and Nanatha, the local people co-own the land and many of the staff are from the village. It's a good opportunity to get an insight into village life and you're assured of a warm welcome. If you want to do some independent exploring you can borrow one of the lodge's bikes to discover some of the wonders of the Baixo do Pinda Peninsula, stopping to admire the views, to see the lighthouse and greet smiling local people.

Day 6

At Nuarro Lodge

After a breakfast of home-made bread, cereals and fresh fruit you again have a choice of activities. The area near the lodge is blessed with abundant bird life, and a gentle stroll gives you the chance to spot some of the species that thrive here. If you're here between July and November you should take a boat trip out into the bay to look for humpback whales, a magnificent sight especially when seen at close range. At any time of year you'll be able to take a cruise in a traditional wooden dhow, viewing the shore from the ocean as you listen to the sound of the sail flapping in the breeze. It's a wonderfully relaxing experience.

Yes, it's indulgent but you are on holiday after all! Later back at the lodge there's time for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking as you make the most of the clear ocean waters, later relaxing on your veranda as you look forward to dinner on the terrace.
