You are driven as high up the hill as conditions allow, and then leave the vehicle behind to explore on foot. Listen and look out for bulbuls, flowerpeckers, sunbirds, warblers and nuthatches, among others, with your guide helping you spot and identify each species. You gradually descend the hill, arriving at Godavari Botanical Gardens where many other colourful birds can be seen, before being driven back to Kantipur Temple House.

Day 7

In Koshi Tappu

Koshi Tappu is a bird watcher's delight. The barrage across the Koshi River has created a huge area of open water with lagoons, mudflats and sandbanks, which coupled with the forests and grasslands provide rich habitats for both marine and land birds. It's little surprise that many consider this one of the best birding locations in Asia. You can expect to see upwards of 100 species in a day here including, if you're lucky, the swamp francolin, striated marsh warbler and red-necked falcon. You can explore on foot and take a rafting trip on the river for a varied day.

Day 8

In Koshi Tappu

A second day in Koshi Tappu. Start the day with a walk in the jungle, led by one of the resident naturalist guides, taking in riverside lagoons which attract not only birds but antelope and buffalo too. You'll have the chance to explore the area by the barrage, too, a short drive from the camp, where you may see Gangetic dolphins in the river. Not to be outdone, almost 280 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve and by the end of the your stay you should have seen a great many of them. Enjoy a hearty dinner back in camp, maybe followed by a nightcap in the bar.
