In The Footsteps of Norman Carr

Walk in the footsteps of Norman Carr, the pioneer of walking safaris in Zambia.

9 days from £6200pp plus international flights.

Immerse yourself in Zambia's beautiful and beguiling South Luangwa Valley with daily walking and 4x4 safaris.

  • Zambia's premier wildlife destination
  • Combination of walking and 4x4 safaris
  • Stay at four lovely bush camps
  • See leopard, lion and wild dog
  • Al fresco dinners and drinks round the campfire
  • Opportunity to sleep out under the stars

Following in the footsteps of Norman Carr, a well respected pioneer of ecotourism and conservation, is a great way to experience South Luangwa National Park, Zambia's foremost wildlife destination and birthplace of the walking safari.

On this holiday you stay at four Norman Carr Safaris camps spending two nights at each. This gives you time to observe different scenery, animals and birds in varied locations. You have a mix of walking safaris and game drives, and have the option to walk or travel by vehicle between camps. The precise order in which you visit the camps can vary and this itinerary is offered as an example.

All activities are led by expert guides who are keen to pass on their knowledge and love of the region and its wildlife, and you should come away with a greatly enhanced appreciation of nature. Elephant, hippo, giraffe, antelope, lion, wild dog and leopard should all feature, and carmine bee eaters will probably put in a colourful appearance. This is nature at its finest.

The camps are small, each with just five suites. Décor is rustic as befits their locations in the bush, yet you have all the comforts you could want. Beds are draped with mosquito nets, fans keep the interior cool and you have your own en-suite complete with a bath for relaxing soaks. Each suite has a private deck where you can sit and survey the scenery and passing wildlife. Between safaris you relax in the lounge and by the campfire and enjoy communal meals, all good opportunities to enjoy the company of other guests and nature lovers. Don't be put off by the lack of Wi-Fi and a mobile phone signal as within a few hours you'll find this a positive asset. After all, why would you want anything to distract you from the beauty of nature? To complete the immersive experience you have the option to splash out and spend a night in the bush as you sleepout under the stars - magical!

This holiday provides the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural world, led by and learning from experienced naturalist guides, as you continue the honoured legacy of Norman Carr, committed to the environment, wildlife and communities of the Luangwa Valley.
