Day 4

To Swakopmund

There's a complete change of scene today, as you swap desert for the quaint coastal town of Swakopmund. Leaving camp after breakfast you will drive through the winding roads of Kuiseb Canyon which open out onto expansive gravel plains as you drive towards Walvis Bay and on to Swakopmund. Swakopmund is a town of many faces. It has a distinct European feel, yet the streets are lined with swaying palm trees and the cool breezes sweeping in from the Atlantic are not what you would typically expect. After settling in to the Hansa Hotel, there will be time to explore the town before dinner.

The marine birdlife in the area is fabulous with pelicans, cormorants and even penguins. You may see bottlenose and heaviside dolphins too, the latter being endemic to the area. Cape fur seals are well represented in this area and are bound to pay a visit, often popping up alongside the boat in hope of a quick snack. As you pass Pelican Point you'll see a variety of ships and oil rigs in the bay, and then you'll be served sparkling wine, fresh oysters, savoury snacks and dessert before returning to the Waterfront just after noon. You will return to the hotel for some free time. There are plenty of shops, boutiques and bars to explore in Swakopmund.

Namibia has so much to show you and today you will continue your journey of exploration and drive to Desert Rhino Camp, located in the rugged Palmwag concession. The landscape here is rocky and mountainous and home to giraffe, gemsbok and springbok which you should encounter. Desert Rhino Camp is where you will stay for two nights and spend your days tracking the rare desert-adapted black rhino. These magnificent animals are monitored by the Save the Rhino Trust who are doing excellent work. It is an amazing opportunity to see how such a seemingly hostile environment can support so much life. Relax at the end of the day by the warm fire with a backdrop of the mountains just visible in the glow of the moonlight.

Day 10 & 11

Skeleton Coast / Palmwag

Few people visit this beautiful, remote area of Namibia but those who do are rewarded with stunning scenery of dry riverbeds, fascinating wildlife and vast gravel plains. Guided nature drives showcase the magnitude of the landscape and offer a chance to see desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife. Nature walks will reveal traces of the Strandlopers (beachcombers) who trod this area hundreds of years ago. It may also be possible to take a full day trip to the Skeleton Coast, littered with shipwrecks and home to huge colonies of Cape fur seals. Then return to camp and, after dinner, enjoy a nightcap and take in the stars and the Milky Way with no light pollution to hinder the experience.
