Day 1


On your arrival in Kigali you are picked up and transfer you to your overnight hotel where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing after your journey. Hotel facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, spa and restaurant, so make yourself at home.

Day 2

Kigali City Tour then To Akagera

After breakfast your guide collects you for a city tour. Kigali has been the country's capital since independence in 1962 and the tour includes Kandt Museum, old Kigali, craft centres and the genocide museum. It's informative and thought provoking.

After lunch you have a drive of about two hours through attractive scenery to Akagera National Park and check in at Akagera Game Lodge, Take time to unwind and later this afternoon you are taken on your first game drive. Take your camera to capture the colours, views and wildlife. Back at camp you have time to shower and change for dinner.

Day 3

Akagera National Park

You have an early start today, as you set off on a game drive in Akagera National Park with your driver-guide. It is a huge wetland and savannah region, with a rich biodiversity of mammals and bird species, and since rhinos and lions were reintroduced here in the 2015 and 2017, it is Rwanda's only 'big 5'. Within the acacia-dotted savannah lands you can hope to see elephants, buffalo, perhaps hyenas, giraffes and zebras, impalas and eland.

Enjoy lunch back at the lodge. then this afternoon you'll set off for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema which continues on to sunset. You can expect to see crocs, hippos and an abundance of birdlife.

Day 4

To Virungas via Kigali

Today your return to Kigali where you can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch you'll continue on the road north towards Volcanoes National Park. After checking in to the Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure. You can relax by the pool and enjoy the pretty gardens before dinner and an early night, in anticipation of tomorrow's gorilla trek.

Day 5

Gorilla Trekking

This is the day you've been waiting for! You head off into Volcanoes National Park in search of mountain gorillas. Your trek could take anything from one to four hours through the ancient forested hills. It can be hard-going, but every effort is worth it when come face-to-face with the gorillas. You have one magical hour to watch them and they are completely at ease with your presence. You won't forget this in a hurry! Return to your hotel to reflect on all you've experienced.

Day 6

Golden Monkey Trek to Lake Kivu

As well as gorillas, the Virungas is also home to golden monkeys as well as other mammal species (such as buffalo, duiker, bushbuck). This morning you have the exciting prospect of a forest trek in search of the golden monkeys. The inquisitive, playful creatures are utterly endearing and this is sure to be one of the highlights of your holiday. You return to the lodge for lunch and then after a visit to the Dian Fossey Museum you will be driven to Lake Kivu Serena Hotel where you have the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 7

Lake Kivu

After breakfast you are collected for a kayaking excursion on Lake Kivu. You'll be on the water for around an hour gentle paddling the waters. After lunch at the hotel there's a city tour of Gisenyi so that you can get a feel of the town and local life. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. The hotel is on a sandy beach and has a swimming pool and water sports centre. This is a beautiful spot and a nice place to relax.

Day 8

Lake Kivu to Nyungwe National Park

This morning you head south to Nyungwe National Park, it's a scenic drive of around five hours with verdant green hills on one side and the road following the lake shore for much of the journey. Once you've checked in at Nyungwe Top View Lodge it's time for a canopy walk (if you have a head for heights). The canopy walk is a series of steel walkways 70m above the ground set in the forest canopy. This gives you, quite literally, a bird's eye view of the forest.

Day 9

Nyungwe Forest Trek

You arrive at Nyungwe Forest park HQ for a trek in search of the Chimpanzees. This is a totally different experience to a gorilla trek. The chimps are likely to be on the move, you will hear them before you catch sight of them. Nyungwe has been classed as 'Africa's Galapagos Islands' due to the diversity of primates, birds and plantlife here. It is one of Africa's oldest, and some say most beautiful, mountain rainforests. You will return to your lodge for lunch and the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 10

To Kigali and home

This morning you travel back to Kigali and say goodbye to your driver-guide at Kigali airport where you check in for your flight home. The drive is approximately six hours. (Flight departures will be late afternoon or early evening due to transfer time back to Kigali)
