Zanzibar is Tanzania's famous spice island but if you want to get right away from the crowds there are other lesser-known islands and islets to choose from, offering small lodges and hotels with friendly personal service.

Chumbe Island is just off Zanzibar and is a teeny island with just one ecolodge. To the north, Pemba is a reasonably sized island but with much less tourism than Zanzibar. Then to the south you'll find Mafia Island which is half the size of Zanzibar, and then much further south is Fanjove Island, a tiny dot in the Indian Ocean uninhabited apart from the staff and guests.
