A special and diverse South India adventure. Wildlife, beaches, backwater boat trips, music, art, crafts and people

  • An overnight houseboat cruise on Kerala's backwaters
  • Meet local artists, craftsmen and musicians
  • Stay in a 400-year-old organic farm and homestays
  • Visit a wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad
  • Enjoy relaxing days on a Malabar beach

Travellers wanting an adventure holiday in India often end up seeing the more 'usual' sides of Kerala. This holiday is different. It takes you on an adventure which is much less ordinary, far more interesting, and which is utterly immersed in the culture of the area.

This is an Indian holiday which gives you a varied and fascinating look at the state of Kerala, including Cochin, the backwaters, the beaches of Kannur and the wildlife and spice gardens of Wayanad. But it also includes privileged insights into the culture and traditions of the local people - artists, musicians, dancers, and other craftsmen.

It is an excellently-priced holiday, especially when you consider the places you'll be staying, including eco-friendly cottages on a backwater island and in Wayanad, six nights homestay in heritage houses, and lovely beach cottages. See below for further details.

There are also some fascinating excursions and activities included which help bring the culture of the area alive for you, and give you your chance to really meet the local people.

This is a fabulous trip for you, but also means a lot locally in the way it brings income to marginalised people and supports local crafts and arts. Altogether a very special trip.

Accommodation

It is one of the last surviving example of a pathinarukettu, a traditional design incorporating 4 courtyards. You will be staying in the restored old granary and guesthouse. Meals are vegetarian and are eaten with your hosts.
Aranyakam Homestay, Wayanad. Nestled in the Wayanad plantations, Aranyakam grows coffee and spices and has gorgeous views of the Nilgiti Hills to one side and Nilambur Forest to the other. Accommodation overlooks the plantation and you will enjoy views of the pretty gardens as you dine.
