Date of trip: 04/03/2014

Country: Tanzania

Overall level of Satisfaction

Tribes Overall: "The holiday was quite superb and the arrangements all worked like clockwork. There was not a single hitch - apart from no dinner on the first night but all uphill after that!"
Tribes Service: "Tracy was extremely knowledgeable and always helpful, receptive to our questions/ideas/queries and pretty prompt with her responses"
Guides: "We particularly asked for a guide with good birding knowledge. Joseph was self-taught in this field, and knew a huge amount about the Tanzanian birdlife. What he didn't know he helped us look up in his books and ours. He was an extremely safety-conscious driver. Could have been a bit more forthcoming at times, but that was just his character and he provided us with all info we requested of him."
Social & Environmental Responsibility: "I had asked to visit a school and was taken to the primary school which the local company we were travelling with supports. Most places we stayed were owned and or staffed by local people."

Bougainvillea Safari Lodge
Wonderful spot with excellent facilities, lovely pool and grounds. Nice restaurant with staff who are obviously in training, and not very sure on winelist, menus etc but very polite and friendly.
Kirurumu Manyara Lodge
Lovely lodge with very friendly staff but the road up to it is rather long and torturous. Plus we had a route-march along wooden walkways within the camp grounds and as it rained torrentially that night, it was rather too far to get to the restaurant without being soaked (although umbrellas were provided). Tent was lovely and had the hugest bed we have ever slept in.
Tarangire Safari Lodge
As advertised - lodge with an awesome view and it was with a big terrace overlooking the park and lovely spacious tented accommodation. Food was OK and the swimming pool was lovely and a welcome relief from the heat.
Outpost Lodge
This did not live up to our expectations. We arrived late evening (as per our schedule) to find the kitchen and bar closed up with nothing but a bottle of water available to us. The bathroom was seedy with an unappealing bathroom with open drain hole. The breakfast was basic and the staff not overly friendly. Would suggest Tribes do not use this lodge.
Machangulo Beach Lodge
Remote, wild, secluded and beautiful. Our room def had the best position - perched on high overlooking the Indian Ocean and Inhaca Island. The many staff (with few visitors during our stay) were friendly and helpful and the food was great - VERY fresh fish every day and a wonderful picnic lunch when we went on the island trip.
AfricaSky Guest House
This is superb - five star to our thinking. A beautifully furnished house, lovely grounds with swimming pool in the centre, gorgous well equipped room, delightful friendly staff and great food - and so cheap!! Can\'t praise it enough and only a short distance from Jo-burg airport. Perfect!

Our Memories

"We've been to Africa on numerous occasions before - it gets under your skin and we just had to return once more but we had never seen cheetah, so imagine our delight to have not one but three sightings, really close up including four of the cutest small cubs imaginable."
"Machangulo Beach Lodge in Mozambique is remote, wild, untamed and really beautiful. The view from our gorgeous room was quite stunning, over the Indian Ocean in all its unpredictable moods. And the daily, locally caught fish was straight from the sea, and quite superb."
