The Seyyida Hotel
The room was lovely - huge, clean and furnished beautifully. We arrived very late (approx 10pm) due to a delayed flight but information on arrival was limited. We sat downstairs in the bar for a drink before bed, however there wasn't any other guests in sight. We had to ask someone from reception to serve us a drink as the bar wasn't staffed. However, we realised in the morning that there was a rooftop bar which may have been where the staff and guests all were! Had we have been given more info on arrival, we would probably have had our drinks on the roof. This is really the only small criticism we have of the hotel. The room, location and view from the rooftop was wonderful.
Unguja Lodge
The lodges were HUGE and the views over the indian ocean breathtaking. We did our PADI whilst there and found the dive school to be Unguja's crowning glory - the dive instructors, equipment and dive sites were all top notch. Whilst the menu didn't contain a great deal of options, we found all of the food to be really great, especially the seafood which was fresh and local. The resort is very relaxed which was exactly what we needed after safari and gorilla trekking. A great resort run by great people (Ralph and Elies).
Kicheche Mara
Food was out of this World!! We were excited every day to know what we were going to have for our dinner and amazed at the quality of the bush breakfasts and lunches we had during our game drives. The tents were well equipped and comfortable, offering a high degree of privacy and allowing you to feel 'at one with nature', helped by the resident hyena, zebra and gazelles grazing outside our tent every evening. We cannot find fault with anything at Kicheche Mara.
Virunga Lodge
WOW!! Really hard to put into words what a special place this is. The lodges are gorgeous, the views are truly breathtaking and the staff are amazing - anticipating your every need without being intrusive. Conversation between guests at dinner centred around gorilla's so probably not the hotel of choice for anyone not trekking, but for us it was the perfect choice and we'd love to go back one day.
