Accommodation

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
Fortunately we only had one night here. It was OK but like a big chain hotel almost anywhere in the world, apart from it's setting. On the plus side we were at a v convenient place for entry to Ngorongoro crater without a long drive.

Mbuzi Mawe Tented Camp
Another fantastic setting, excellent food and the dance displays a bonus. Being part of the Serena hotel chain, I think affected the attitude of the staff in a negative sense. The main downside to the experience was 70 dollars (2 notes) going missing from our money in the general office safe. We did complain but denials all round and the suggestion that we had miscounted the money. Also we were in a rush to get away as our guide was waiting and initially we couldn't be certain of the loss although later we were.

Kisima Ngeda
Our favourite lodge, aside from Chumbe. Fantasic setting, excellent service. Great to be able to swim in the pool. Our visit to the Hadzabe and Datonga people was amazing and our local guide superb.

Kirurumu Manyara Lodge
This was super as our first lodge experience. We had a local walk with a Maasai guide, which was great. I regretted not tipping him better, but it was our first day and I wasn't sure.

Chumbe Island Lodge
This is a truly wonderful place. Everything was near perfect (apart from the water pressure in the shower but this is being picky!). Snorkelling on the coral reef was fantastic, we even saw turtles. As it was Ramadan we had 2 excellent guides, students/ graduates from the UK, standing in for local staff, who were really enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We saw the coconut crabs, one even came to visit us at our bungalow! Sea food was lovely and the staff very hospitable and helpful.
