Tanzania holiday ideas experiences accommodation places to go when to visit Tanzania map reviews

Holiday review by David Purcell

Name: David Purcell
Date of trip: 04/08/2010
Number of people: 2
Country: Tanzania

Overall level of Satisfaction

Tribes Overall: "Excellent - all the parts of the experience worked seamlessly."

Tribes Service: "Could not have been better, Julie was on the ball."

Guides: "Sven was the best and the fact that he also likes photography was a great bonus. Guides at the other camps were were also very good - very personal service and good interaction. "

Social & Environmental Responsibility: "Gave local people work and money in to the area (I assume) but then most resorts do the same thing. Other than the Sopa lodge all camps appeared to have minimal impact on the environment / wildlife."

Accommodation

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
It just did not work for me - poor food, to many tourists, intermittent hot water and a long boring drive to get anywhere. That whole Ngorongoro experience is not one I will repeat.Tribes reply: we do always point out that Ngorongoro Crater is very busy and touristy, unfortunately there are very few reasonably priced lodges in the area and only a handful on the crater rim itself.

The Tides Lodge
If you need a quiet resort this is it. Large spacious rooms, very close to the beach - a little too quiet for my daughter. Surrounding Sisal farms, local village and the nearest town were all interesting - now an owner of hand crafted tyre-tread shoes.

Sea Cliff Hotel Dar
Long way from the airport, some reasonable shopping locally, good breakfast. Average city hotel but with a very good view.

Selous Impala Camp
Like Mdonya, very good and generally a step-up interms of the accomodation and the food. The big plus of this place in the river safari option just nice to relax and view the game from the water. Best place we experienced to see crocs & hippo close. Private style dinning (individual tables) - we preferred the communal of evening atmoshere of Mdonya. Again great staff.

Mdonya Old River
This was great, tent and facilities within ideal and the location next to the dried river bed excellent for viewing game from within the camp. Very much enjoyed the communal atmosphere around the fire, having a beverage or three with other guests. Dinning under the stars on the long table also encouraged social interaction with other guests. Food was good - perhaps a little fussy but interesting / adventurous considering the kitchen facilities. Very close to nature at this camp in a very comfortable atmoshere, lions at night, elephants / buffalo close by when dinning. Great staff.
