Kwara Camp
Good - atmosphere wasnt anywhere near Meno a Kwena which we'd just arrived from. The local people work there are not owners, don't love it, it's a job and they're there for 90 days then 25 off. there is no phone reception nor is there internet access - it's truly off the beaten track which is great but the camp wasnt quite as good as could have been. it wasnt as homely as could have been. the manager didnt eat full meals or show much interest in the visitors like other places we stayed. the spirits cupboard was locked and you had to get unlocked to get wine. we were offered a choice of when to eat our dinner last night at honeymoon suite and we asked for an hour to get showered after our drive but manager said 'no' and gave us half an hour. There wasn't same spirit there. Food was great and they catered for my wheat intolerance. There was a scorpion in our tent the third night - we got upgraded on our third night to honeymoon tent. there were holes in it and a light was left on for them to serve us dinner. it is furthest from the main lodge and I would NOT recommend anyone to stay there as our first tent had amazing view better than honeymoon tent. It was under a tree and on concrete rather than up on stilts. The guides at Kwara were the best. Friendly and informative. Were very very respectful and considerative of our prefernces and fears!!! George and Bate were very knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna and understanding of the animals and their behaviour. They knew our comfort zones too and were kind.
Meno a Kwena
Excellent. The location amazing. Food lovely. Brilliant accomodation - gorgeous. Truly out in the bush. The staff appear to love it and engage and socialise with the guests. The game drive was a full day which was too long though. The guide followed an elephant when it was getting a bit annoyed. The actual situation of the camp is not as we were told tho. We were under impression it was actually in the salt pans and we'd see meerkat, desert lion (maybe) and cheetah and various other species you'd find in the desert. We were under distinct impression we were in either the kalahari desert at the salt pans and we were about 100km from salt pans and therefore we did not see these animals or have even a chance of seeing them. The only thing we saw different to what we could see other places was a few species of antelope that were not really what we went to see!!! We loved meno a kwena and dont want this to seem like a complaint but it is an observation and we did feel we were mis sold this camp.
Muchenje Safari Lodge
The owner was present while we were there and the managers love it and treat it as home. Managers were lovely. They didnt seem to know it was our honeymoon though (and when owner realised he aranged some sparkling wine for our room) and didn't cater as well for my wheat intolerance - the first night there wasnt much I could eat. We met some lovely people at this camp and saw a pack of rare african wild dogs whihc was a real treat.
Waterberry Lodge
This was our most 'home from home' location. We ate on our own rahter than with everyone else and the manager took the time to plan our day with us. Food lovely and a very relaxing, sleepy place to end our honeymoon. Please advise travellers of the hassle you get from locals near the Falls and at the time of year we were here the Falls aren't very spectacular and I think probably you need to go to the Zimbabwean side which takes time and money we didnt have. ATMs nearest are at Sun International hotel but the guards wont let you in at the entrance near the Falls unelss you're a resident. you have to walk out to main road - a bit daunting given number of muggings that are reported there.
