Tribes Overall: "We really enjoyed the mix of three different locations (Santiago, Atacama and Rapa Nui). The arrangements all worked smoothly (apart from the internal flights)."
Tribes Service: "The booking process was fine. Our problem was with the weather details on Vamoos. I checked them for a couple of weeks before we left in order to decide what clothes to take. Vamoos said that the temperature in Santiago was in the mid 20sC, in Atacama it was about 18C and in Rapa Nua in the low 20sC. However, Santiago was about 30C, San Pedro de Atacama 28C and Rapa Nui 28C. Consequently we had sweatshirts, jackets, etc with us that we did not use.
"
Guides: "Pablo, our driver in Atacama, and Niko, our guide in Rapa Nui, were both excellent. Pablo, having discovered that we were interested in birdwatching, brought binoculars and a wildlife guide book with him on subsequent tours. Niko was extremely knowledgeable about the archaeology of Rapa Nui.
Our guides in Santiago and Atacama were both good. However, Rai (in Atacama) had not been informed that we were interested in wildlife but, even after we told her, she failed to point out guanaco to us the only time she saw them, which meant that we missed them. However, she and Pablo did adjust the timing of our trip to the El Tatio geysers in order to maximise the birdwatching opportunities."
Social & Environmental Responsibility: "Not aware of any specific social and/or environmental benefits."
Accommodation
Excellent location, good hotel restaurant (with great views) and lots of other options nearby.
Large, comfortable room.
A couple of minutes' walk from the airport. Very large, comfortable room.
Typical Holiday Inn, provides what is needed of an airport hotel, especially if you have an early start.
Our Memories
"The scenery of the Atacama desert and of the Altiplano was fantastic. The overall experience of Rapa Nui and its archaeological sites (and in particular the Rano Raraku quarry) was wonderful. We enjoyed the food (and wine and pisco sours!) everywhere and found the Chilean people generally very welcoming."
