Best time to visit Antarctica

The best time to visit Antarctica is between late October and March when there is sufficient sunshine to melt the sea ice to enable ships to visit and when temperatures rise to around freezing, warm for this destination!

Wrap up warm for this wilderness wonderland!

You’ll visit in the summer when daylight lasts longest and wildlife is most active. You can expect sunshine but also need to be prepared for the cold to get the most out of your fabulous holiday at the end of the earth.

October & November

It can be very cold in late October and November at the start of summer but you have the advantage of observing superb formations of sea ice before it begins to melt. Mating season begins and you can witness courtship displays.

December & January

Temperatures peak in these two months, though that is still relative. Long hours of sunshine and relative warmth, temperatures peak in these two months, make this a popular time with visitors and conditions are ideal for photography, hiking and seeing penguin chicks.

February & March

February remains quite mild and by March, towards the end of summer, it become colder often below freezing. Both months offer good chances of spotting whales. As the season progresses there are fewer vessels and visitors.

Weather in Antarctica

Bright and bracing! Antarctica’s summer months are blessed with long hours of sunshine but that doesn’t mean heat although daytime temperatures regularly top freezing.

You can expect temperatures of 2-3°C and on sunny days with little wind as much as 5-6°C, falling to well below zero after dark. December to February are the warmest months with colder temperatures in early and late summer. To get the most out of your excursions by boat and on land you should dress in layers including wind and waterproof jacket and trousers, warm hat and gloves.
