A morning encounter with wild dogs
It's 530am and I've had my shower, coffee and fruit muffin, and I'm jumping aboard the 4x4, armed with my camera and binoculars.
High wire fun in Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls has many draws, with the Falls themselves being the biggest of all However, when you stand at the beautiful Lookout Café, looking down into the gorge as the white water barrages down, a crazy idea comes to mind … to throw myself into the middle of the gorge! “it’s not scary, it’s fun - I conquered my fears and literally dived straight in!” Not without some sort of rope or wire of course, and I wasn’t brave enough to do the bungee jump off the bridge.
Could you think of anything better than a G&T in hand, camera around your neck, the open Zambezi River ahead and the call of the African Fish Eagle? No, me neither! This was my magical sunset cruise experience on the mighty Zambezi River.
Victoria Falls at high water
Park fees paid and entry completed, it’s time to enter the park and visit the mighty Victoria Falls! An experienced guide gives a detailed account of the river’s geography, which is incredibly fascinating, and the colonial history of the Falls.
Elephant’s Eye Bush Walk
After an early morning wake-up call I get dressed quickly and head to the dining tent for a cup of coffee and muffin before meeting our specialist walking guides, Milton and Rafael, for a short briefing.
A Day at Victoria Falls River Lodge
An early wake up call at 5:30 for a quick cuppa and a rusk before me and my guide, Billy, jump in his boat as the sun starts to glint over the horizon.
Chocolate a divine gift
Costa Rica is an incredible place! Not only does it have stunning wildlife, pristine beaches and plenty of adventure, but did you know you can also have a genuine cultural experience with indigenous tribes? I didn’t.
While lions are found in many big safari places, on a recent trip to the Masai Mara in Kenya, I couldn’t believe quite how many lions I saw on one game drive, let alone the full 5 days I spent there! Never in my ‘safari life’ have I found myself driving past a lion sighting and barely stopping for more than a few minutes - that’s how frequently we saw them! The Mara offers great wildlife viewing all year round with resident prides remaining in their territories throughout the year.
Migration: An ‘almost’ river crossing
Many people have seen the famed river crossings of the annual wildebeest migration on programmes such as BBC wildlife and National Geographic, but what you might not know is how long the build up is before an actual crossing happens.
Best place to see Hippos in Zambia
Kaingo Camp is the best place to see Hippos in Zambia Now, you may find a trip with the hope of seeing hippos to be quite strange since they’re not normally the most sought after animals when you think of a safari.
A self-drive safari in Kruger
I have been on a number of guided, self-drive, camping, lodge etc safaris and I have to say that whilst I love the professionalism of the guides, with all their knowledge that I couldn’t hope to learn, the off-roading and being able to get up close to the wildlife, there is nothing quite like driving yourself through somewhere like the Kruger National Park and coming up on anything from a massive bull elephant in must to a tiny mongoose skitting along the roadside.
Grumpy Old Men!
Grumpy old men, there’s always one in every family!!! Do you have a member of the family that is too grumpy for words and ruins everyone else’s fun? Well, apparently elephants do too! On a recent safari in East Africa our vehicle came across a small herd of elephants, approx 15 in the entire group.
