Camp Xakanaxa (pronounced Ka-ka-na-ka) was one of Botswana's first-ever safari camps in the Okavango Delta, and it combines an authentic African bush camp experience with stylish and comfortable accommodation. Camp Xakanaxa is in the beautiful Moremi Game Reserve, set on the banks of the Khwai River on the Xakanaxa Lagoon, a location where big game and fantastic birdlife are guaranteed. With friendly staff, Xakanaxa ensures an intimate and relaxed experience.

The elegant thatched timber main buildings and the 12 classic safari tents are raised on platforms, giving guests superb views of the lagoons and islands. Each comfortably- furnished tent has a private viewing deck to make the most of its lagoon-side position, and all tents are ensuite, with a shower, handbasin and toilet. Xakanaxa Camp has a guest lounge, small library, dining room, gift shop and fire deck. There is an attractive swimming pool set in an elevated wooden deck surrounded by trees and shrubs, an ideal place to relax between game drives, and a plunge pool. The camp is powered by a generator, yet candles and lanterns are used at night to create a magical environment.

Meals at Camp Xakanaxa are usually taken in the dining room with spectacular views over the lagoon and surrounding floodplains. The chef provides excellent safari fare. Guests may dine in private if they prefer.

The pattern of the day is usually an early wake-up call with tea or coffee and a light breakfast at 0530 - 0600 then out on a morning game drive as the animals wake up. Back to camp for about 10.30am, a brunch is served of breakfast and lunch dishes. Guests then have a siesta time until mid-afternoon when high tea is served before heading out for a late afternoon game drive or boat cruise and coming back to camp for around 1830 - 1900. Dinner is served between 1930 - 2000 with fireside drinks before and after.

Game drives are in open Land Rovers, with a seating capacity of 10, though we accommodate only 6 or 8 guests per vehicle. Water game viewing is in motorboats equipped with comfy seats and a foldaway canvas awning for protection from the sun.

Client Rating for Botswana 5/5 from 120 reviews

This was probably my favourite camp. Moremi reserve was beautiful, more picturesque than the other areas, and the wildlife encounters spectacular and just kept coming! At Camp Xakanaxa the tents were traditional but very comfortable and close to the wildlife. The only problem with this camp is its unpronounceable name!
