The Waterfront Granary boasts a superb location. On the one side it opens out onto Bazaar Road where you might see traders touting their wares, and on the other you have the calm, serene waters of the Mattancherry Channel, linking the ocean to the port and backwaters.

This is the first hotel of its kind in India, once a granary as the name suggests, the building then became a store for Ayurvedic herbs. It was later refurbished and rebuilt into the boutique museum hotel that it is today, a careful process that took over three years. The result is a unique hotel of just 16 rooms, each with a charm of its own. The views vary from the waterfront to the bustling bazaar and the rooms are filled with artefacts and beautiful wooden furniture along with colourful handmade Athankudi floor tiles which add to the ambience. Some rooms have traditional Godown doors and high wooden beamed ceilings, the suites are split level and all have en-suite bathrooms with modern facilities. As you would expect, each room has air-conditioning, TV, phone and a safe too.

The Traders Deck is the hotel's restaurant located on the pier. Here you can enjoy barbecues, delicious fusion food and Kutchi delicacies made from recipes handed down the generations in the Singeri family who own the hotel. The Assanjo Masalo cafe occupies the terrace with a commanding view of the Mattancherry Channel, tantalising your taste buds with traditional Kutchi snacks

The museum hall on the ground floor houses an eclectic collection of sculptures, manuscripts and furniture dating back centuries and showcasing life in ancient Kerala. There is an on-site aromatherapy spa, offering an array of pampering treatments, you can also relax in the pool with views of the busy harbour. Your every need is taken care of right down to retail therapy, the gift shop in the lobby stocks handicrafts, jewellery, ethnic Indian wear and mementos to remind you of your time in historic Cochin.

While you are here, it would be a shame to miss a cruise of Cochin Harbour and its waterways on the hotel’s private boat. Watch the sun set on the horizon with a brilliant display of colour, as the cool sea breeze wafts over you and you feel the gentle rhythm of the waves.

Client Rating for India 5/5 from 130 reviews

The staff here were welcoming and friendly, the food is fabulous and very reasonable. The rooms are lovely but we had very noisy rooms (near reception and the kitchen) which I wouldn't recommend. Really nice and different Hotel.
