Tambopata Research Centre

Tambopata Research Centre is a basic yet comfortable lodge in the middle of the uninhabited part of the Tambopata National Reserve.

  • See the world's largest macaw clay lick
  • Views of the rainforest from your bedroom
  • Remote, unspoilt location
  • Guided walking trails in the forest
  • Combines well with a stay at Refugio Amazonas
  • Access to top quality photographic equipment

Tambopata Research Centre is a 24-bedroom lodge in an uninhabited portion of Tambopata National Reserve. It is just 500 metres from the world's largest known macaw clay lick. With its remote location, small scale and the presence of researchers, the centre is an excellent base for in-depth exploration of the rainforest.

The centre was built combining traditional native architecture and materials with modern, low-impact, eco-lodge technology. Four interconnected buildings house the bedrooms, dining area, kitchen and service facilities. The 24 rooms are grouped into 4 categories and vary in size from 21 to 85sqm. All have mosquito nets, electricity, safe, and en-suite shower room with hot water and toiletries. Top-of-the-range deluxe suites have private terraces and plunge pools.

Buffet meals are served in the small bar and dining area. At night the centre is lit by kerosene lamps and candles and there is a generator for recharging batteries.

Guides are young, English-speaking Peruvian biologists. Walks on trails are kept at a 6:1 tourist to guide ratio, increasing wildlife encounter opportunities. The macaw clay lick is a huge 50 metre tall cliff of reddish clay on the west bank of the Tambopata River. You will see dozens of species of macaws and parrots. There are numerous trails through a variety of forest types giving the opportunity to see a range of rainforest wildlife including monkeys, peccaries, and tapirs. The Photo Makers Lab, introduced in 2017, gives guests access to specialist photography equipment and advice, to help you improve your camera skills and capture some memorable moments and sights.

If desired a stay at Tambopata Research Centre can be combined with a stay at its sister lodge, Refugio Amazonas.

Client Rating for Peru 5/5 from 58 reviews

Remote cosy lodge in the rainforest, very familiar atmosphere, very friendly staff, very clean in spite of minimal two showers per day and guest, no problems with large community-bathrooms. TRC is offering a lot of paths and short boat rides, great wildlife in day- and nightwalks, relaxing hammocks. Great!
