Location: Sumaq Hotel is on the lush banks of the Vilcanota River, below the world-famous site of Machu Picchu, in Machu Picchu Archaeological Park. It is a 10-minute walk from the train station at Aguas Calientes.

Rooms: There are 62 rooms in total, made up of 59 superior deluxe rooms (29sq m), 2 junior suites (41sq m) and the Imperial suite (75sq m). All have cable TV, direct dial telephone, Wi-Fi, safe, minibar, hair dryer, heating, sound-proof windows, blackout curtains, goose-down comforters, alpaca wool blankets plus an en-suite bathroom. Suites also have balconies. The hotel has a family room sleeping up to 4 adults and 4 children. There is 24-hour room service and the Imperial suite has the services of a butler.

Activities: The hotel provides a shuttle bus to Machu Picchu so you can explore the site at your leisure (permit needed). Machu Picchu Archaeological Park is ideal for hiking, climbing and bird watching. The chef conducts cooking classes, concentrating on traditional Peruvian cuisine. You can also learn how to make a perfect pisco sour with advice from the bartender. You'll be able to observe pachamanca, the preparation of a traditional Peruvian meal in an underground oven sealed with earth. While at Sumaq Hotel you may have the chance to witness the 'payment to the Earth' ritual, a ceremony led by a shaman, which includes songs and prayer, and to enjoy 'Pachamanca', a traditional Andean meal cooked in an underground oven.

Facilities: The restaurant is on the second floor and has amazing views of the valley. For light bites and drinks there is a cafe bar with a small terrace. Aqlla Spa offers a range of treatments including Inca techniques, hydrotherapy and various massages. There's also a sauna. The hotel offers a laundry service. There is an on-site boutique.

Dining: Meals, including traditional Peruvian dishes, are eaten at individual tables.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. There are guided tours and cooking classes designed for families. There is a large family room.

Health: Machu Picchu is not a malarial area.

Communication: There is Wi-Fi internet access in all guest rooms and most public areas.
