SouthWild Jaguar Flotel

Brazil

Absolutely superb experience in the Suite. Everything was excellent, from our guide, the comfort of our room, the atmosphere (joking with all the fisherman about their daily catches etc)to the fantastic quality of the food and the service on board. Perfect in every way.

The staff and food were really good. The accommodation was a bit Spartan but I had expected this. The room partitions were paper thin and only acted to separate the rooms. You might as well have all been in the same room for sound!

KiKi was our guide at Southwild Flotel in the Pantanal. Born in Ecuador, he was the GM of the Lima Peru zoo for 12 years and has been with Southwild for the past 4 years. We were very fortunate to meet this man and spend 5 days with him. His knowledge of the the Pantanal inhabitants is so vast (genus, species) I don't know how he can possibly keep all this information in his head. Watching him "read" the environment every morning and afternoon was fascinating - and productive - as he would inevitably find a well hidden monkey or, of all things, a stingray. He was always ensuring we had enough water, and were comfortable, and always offered extra assistance at every opportunity. We recapped our adventures at meal times, enjoying interesting conversations and some very good laughs. KiKi was a tremendous guide and a wonderful person.

Basic but fine as most of the time is spent on trips on the little boats. Food ok but not much variety.

Terrible room. We upgraded to a suite and paid an extra US 150 per night. Much better! Food absolutely terrible.

Suites are big and spacious with two huge double beds (we upgraded on arrival from our original Standard Room). Food is wholesome but basic but taking into account the location it was fine and plentiful. Staff were very friendly and helpful and we felt relaxed and at home during our stay.

Room was a little basic, but I only used it to sleep in. The boat trips were efficient and the dining area was comfortable. I was particularly impressed at the amount of work going into building a picture of the jaguar population....I gather nobody else can be bothered.

The suites are great - the website pictures do not do them justice. Food was ok, although variety was limited.

My comments are much the same as for Southwild Pantanal. The room was very small but was what I expected. However, it was slightly irritating that it was next to a staff room of some description and during our "down time" (i.e. between trips) a number of the staff would meet there and they were noisy to say the least! The problem seemed to be very thin walls and ceilings which didn't block out any noise. It was also a little disappointing that there was nowhere outside to sit and watch the world go by. Obviously there's nothing that you can do about this, but an outside area with chairs would be nice. The window in our room was tiny and although there was a small lounge area it didn't give a clear view of the river/bank.

Accommodation basic on main boat - noisy fisherman can be a problem. There is a new boat moored alongside with more spacious suites. Food excellent. Paul Donahue gave a series of evening talks on jaguars, caimans, giant otters and capybara's, which were informative and very enjoyable Two 4 hr boat trips a day exploring the main and side rivers. Many jaguar and giant otter sightings including a confrontation between the two, as well as a jaguar plunging into the river after a capybara and jaguars mating. Amazing number of birds Sergio and our boatman, Jader could not have made our trip more enjoyable.

Delivered on Jaguar sightings. We saw cats on every boat ride. We got upgraded to a suite on our last night, and although the room was larger and particularly the window; most of the time in your room it is either dark or too hot for the animals to be active. Not sure it would be worth paying the extra. Food good, breakfast not great but you are on the river. In the evening they have short talks on the various main animal species. A nice introduction and who knew Capybara's make good pets!!!

The Jaguar Suite was superb. Bright and roomy with lots of space for storage and charging electrical items. Wildlife was spotted from the balcony of the flotel. Easy access to the boat for river trips. Set in the jaguar zone of the Pantanal. Good food. Staff friendly and helpful.
