Shawandha Lodge

Costa Rica

Lodge rooms good. Comfortable and you feel right in amongst "jungle".No restaurant open so used local eateries. Best, La Botanica was nearest (turn left up road and about 200 yards)

A very different resort and the only one without air conditioning but it is cooler on the Caribbean coast and the large fans in the room worked very well. We very much liked this resort and the breakfasts were I think the best. The dinners were also very good. The Staff were very friendly and helpful and the location was good. The resort of Puerto Viejo was very very busy. Not really our cup of tea but again probably due to the Easter weekend. The area itself is a great location with a long road along the very long beach, so even though the resort itself was very busy it was possible to find some quite spots.

Magical, we really enjoyed staying in our lodges, loved the abundance of wildlife right on our door step. Our only criticism would be the lack of opportunity to buy drinks during the day or some light snacks. We had an early start on two of our mornings there for excursions, we returned around 3ish and headed to the pool area to relax, a drink and snack was very much needed but unfortunately unavailable.

Marvin greeted us and checked us in - he was very friendly and efficient. He helped our daughter spot frogs and an Agouti in the grounds. The howler monkeys were easy to spot and hear! Nice path to the beach directly across the road from the hotel. We liked the pretty tiled bathrooms in the lodges.

The hotel was great and near to the nicest beach in the area but it was probably a bit far from livelier things - to get to Puerto Viejo and back was about $20 so adding that onto every day adds up. We really enjoyed staying here but I think that if we were staying longer than we did, we would have been frustrated by the location of the hotel.

It felt this should be a great venue but perhaps now is very tired. The bed linen was quite worn and the accommodation needs a refresh. There were no drawers in the accommodation and it was difficult to unpack. Our organised trip to the indigenous population was very good.

We LOVED our lodge and will never forget the cacophony of wildlife around it or laying in the hammock listening to the rain. Swimming pool surrounded by huge foliage was gorgeous & we went in every day. Beautifully presented bowl of freshest fruit for breakfast was yummy & French owner & all staff made us feel very welcome.

This was a real gem. We were uniquely situated within individual bungalows nestled within the Rain Forest surrounded most of the time by really loud Howler Monkeys. We loved the hammocks on the verandas and the swimming pool surrounded by the most amazing array of exoctic plants, it was like swimming in the palm house at Kew Gardens. The food in the restaurant was very good - I can definately recommend the steak - and the breakfasts, fresh fruit followed by eggs were the freshest we had all holiday. The pineapple was the best we tasted in Costa Rica. There's a short walk to the beach and a wonderful stroll along the beach to Punta Uva, worth checking out the Eden Beach restaurant. There is also an ancient Ceiba tree in the grounds.

The rooms are quite basic and minimalist, but exceptionally clean. All the food was excellent, the staff were all very friendly, helpful and professional. We enjoyed the location. The pool wasn't that appealing, mainly as it was fairly close to a noisy road. We liked the layout and the proximity to the beach and the town of Peurto Viejo.

3 nights here. This was our first introduction to rainforest territory! Our greeting was the Howler Monkeys which were a pleasure. The Owner was around and took the time to meet and greet. Lovely cabin with plenty of room and a super hammock to chill out on. Really imaginative hotel and surroundings and so natural too. Breakfast was a little repetitive. It was from here that we went to see the BriBri tribe.

Our first real taste of Costa Rica and we were made very welcome here. The French owner takes time to talk to her guests and the food is absolutely first rate. Wonderful fish and the fruits are amazing. The grounds are lovely and the bungalows are comfortable. There is also a pool to cool off in and to relax by.
