Selous Impala Camp

Tanzania

The camp was fantastic on pretty much all fronts. My one disappointment was the food. Not that it wasn,t good but i would have liked to have had the opportunity too eat local food and try local recipies. I know they have to appeal to the masses but for me it was a wasted opportunity.

Clean, comfortable, safe, food was good and staff were exceptionally welcoming and helpful. Lovely surroundings and a real 'immersion' experience. Even the sounds of Andreas (hippo) at night beside our tent was not alarming but thrilling. My only suggestion would be to include a local African food option on the menu occasionally.

Impala camp in Selous was lovely in all respects. There was plenty of game in the immediate vicinity, and I had giraffe, bush babies and hippos around my tent most nights. The view in the evening from my wooden verandah as the sun set over the Rufiji river was absolutely wonderful. However, I suspect the camp at the absolute epicentre of game viewing is still Lake Manze and we had a longish drive to see most of the “serious” animals. Once we did so, we saw plenty of lions, a pack of 15 wild dogs and even a leopard which strolled right up to the vehicle which first spotted it (not mine, sadly- I only caught a few minutes as it disappeared into the deep bush). Hippo, monitor lizards and crocs on the river beneath my tent were commonplace and the birds were as I remembered them from my last two trips, spectacular. The robberies themselves were certainly very bold - vervet monkeys descended on my early morning tea and biscuits and left devastation in their wake; weaver birds ganged up to deprive me (successfully) of my breakfast cereal; and in the evening the bush babies distracted my attention and stole the delicious bread rolls from my plate.

This was luxury camping but with the drama of the possibility of hippos under our tent platform at night! Everything was wonderful with walks, drives & boat-trips with many surprises. The camp manager was always helpful with all aspects of our stay. A great location!

The ideal camp with which to end my trip particularly as there were several opportunities to enjoy Selous from the water. Had my own Masai,(Moiy), to call & escort me everywhere - quite necessary to ensure my safety from roaming animals, especially elephants. This was rather restricting but we seemed to get on well with chats of just smiles & grins!

We were lucky enough to have an excellent guide and his Jeep all to ourselves. Although it necessarily involved a lot of offroading, it worked really well and we saw almost all of the wildlife we had anticipated. The Selous camp and staff were charming. This was our third safari and the best. Being escorted everywhere by Maasai was a first!

Very relaxed, happy atmosphere - we felt very comfortable here. Overlooking the Rufiji River and close Lake Swandu and Lake Nzelakela. The tent, although quite small, was beautifully appointed and our tent was close to the swimming pool. Food - beautifully presented with some lovely details.
