Rekero Camp

Masai Mara Kenya

  • Classic tented safari camp
  • Great location for the game viewing and the migration
  • Small, personal camp with high-quality friendly service

Open: Rekero Camp is open from June to March each year, closing in April and May.

Location: Rekero  Camp is just 50 metres from the Talek River and close to the confluence of that river and the Mara River in the Masai Mara National Reserve. The nearest airstrip is Ol Kiombo, 20 minutes drive away.

Rooms: There are 9 guest tents, 2 of which are larger than the others and are suitable for families. The maximum number of guests is 22 at any one time. All tents offer spacious accommodation with private verandas and en-suite bathrooms with a flush toilet, bucket shower and hand basin. Showers can be requested at any time and hot and cold water is supplied in thermos flasks for the basin and the basin on the veranda. There is 24-hour solar lighting and a torch is provided in each tent.

Activities: The camp is ideally placed for observing the annual migration which takes place between July and October each year. There is good game viewing at other times of year, too. As well as game drives the camp offers walking safaris, cultural visits to a Maasai village, bush picnics and sundowners. Balloon rides can be arranged at additional cost. A seating area is set up each day by the river where you can sit and watch the birds and animals and just relax. A free presentation by a Kenya Wildlife Trust researcher can be arranged during your stay but needs to be booked in advance.

Facilities: There is a large lounge with plenty of seating and a selection of books and games. Meals are served in the dining area next to the lounge or outside in the fresh air. As well as breakfast (a light meal if going out on a drive, or a cooked breakfast by the river), lunch (a buffet) and dinner (a 3-course meal), the camp serves afternoon tea and cake each day. There is a partially shaded deck overlooking the river for drinks and private dinners. Sundowners are served by the campfire unless you are out on an evening game drive. You can buy gifts and souvenirs at the on-site shop. The camp has solar energy with a generator for backup. There are battery charging facilities in the dining tent. The camp offers a daily laundry service for garments other than underwear, though washing powder is provided for your use in your tent and there is a washing line on the veranda.

Dining: Meals are taken communally, but private dining can be arranged.

Children: Children aged 6 years and over are welcome.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: Internet access is available on request. There is wifi in guest tents but not in public areas.

Oh my word, I love this place! I could sit and look at the view for days on end, and at the right time of the year, you could even be lucky and see the migration pass right in front of your eyes here. With good hosting, game vehicles and guiding, you can't lose with this camp.
