Onguma The Fort is an impressive sight with its thick ochre walls, tall tower and huge entrance gates. Interiors are a blend of African, Moroccan and Indian styles, with antique doors, windows and lanterns and red plaster walls. There are two lounges one of which overlooks the waterhole. Both have chairs and sofas strewn with cushions where you can curl up with a book or simply unwind, The bar is a cosy place to enjoy a convivial drink. The dining area has open sides to let you enjoy views of the bush, and meals are also served outdoors. The terrace faces the waterhole and has sunny and shaded areas. There is also a plunge pool and an outdoor bar. The best place to be at sunset is at the top of the tower, where you can witness panoramic views.
A typical day at Onguma The Fort starts with a buffet breakfast followed by a game drive in Etosha National Park, just a 20-minute drive away. Alternatively, you can join a guide for a nature walk in Onguma Private Reserve. Either way, you return to The Fort for lunch and to rest during the hottest part of the day. In the later afternoon, you have the chance to join a game drive in Onguma Reserve, and finally, the opportunity of a night drive to see some of the reserve's nocturnal species.
Suites are designed like mini kasbahs, each set well apart from the other. Thick walls keep them cool though there is also air-conditioning so you can regulate the temperature precisely. The bathroom has his and hers basins, shower and toilet and there's an additional outdoor shower. The front of the bedroom has a canvas wall that can be rolled back for views of the pan and opens onto a private deck with comfy seating. The honeymoon suite is the most secluded and has a lounge, while the sultan suite is in the tower of the main building and also has its own lounge, TV and viewing deck.
Keen photographers will love the Onkolo Hide by a waterhole in the reserve, and if you fancy a romantic night under the stars there is a wonderful Land Cruiser that has been made into a mobile sleepout deck!
