Olivers Camp

Tanzania

  • Superb game viewing location
  • Chance to sleep under the stars fly camping
  • Enjoy meals on the terrace
  • Relax in the L-shaped lounge
  • Drinks by the firepit

Open: The camp is closed from the beginning of April till mid May due to the rains.

Location: Oliver's is roughly in the centre of Tarangire National Park, south of the Minyoyo Pools, and only about 30 mins drive from the Silale swamp. It is about 1 hour's drive from the closest airstrip at Kuro, or about 2½ hours from the main gate.

Rooms: There are 10 luxury tented rooms, including 1 family tent that can sleep up to 4, and a honeymoon tent. Beds can be configured either as twins or doubles. En-suite shower rooms have hot and cold running water and flush toilets.

Activities: Wildlife viewing game drives in Tarangire National Park. The camp is also permitted to offer night drives (one of only two camps). Walking safaris are also offered here, and at the time of writing this is the only camp to offer walking safaris within the national park. These can be from about 1 hour to a full day, or even over multiple days if combined with fly camping. Oliver's is the only camp in the park with the authority to offer fly camps (a lightweight mobile camp). Sleeping in a small tent, often just of mosquito netting so you can see the stars as you drift off to sleep, you get the real feeling of being out in the wild.

Facilities: There is a large open-sided, L-shape lounge-dining area incorporating a library, and a deck for al fresco breakfasts and dinners. The camp has a firepit for pre- and post-dinner drinks and chats.

Dining: Meals are eaten at a communal table unless otherwise requested. There is a dining area under the main thatched building, but there is also a lovely dining deck under a huge tree, and a romantic private dinner on the verandah of your own tent can also be arranged.

Children: Children are very welcome here from 6 years of age. Children from 16 years are allowed on walking safaris.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: Wi-Fi internet access is available in a small tent near the main area. There is a mobile signal here but it is intermittent.

Client Rating for Tanzania 5/5 from 217 reviews

Oliver’s camp in Tarangire was new to me (the park I knew), and fairly obviously a significant step up in terms of luxury and facilities from Mdonya Old River and Lake Manze camps. This is a very special place and it is exceptionally well run – no wonder it is popular with the wealthy American clientele for whom the African experience is something to dip into (and retreat from at the end of the day) rather than more full on as with the other two camps.
