Nkwichi Lodge is on the Mozambique shoreline of Lake Niassa (known as Lake Malawi on the Malawi side), whose crystal clear waters contain a greater variety of indigenous fish species of than any other lake in the world. The lodge is on the Mozambique shoreline at one of the most beautiful points on the lake. The main lodge building has a sitting room, library and gift shop downstairs and a dining room and bar upstairs, overlooking the lake. The fig tree platform on the lakeshore provides another popular spot for dining and relaxation.
Accommodation is in 6 chalets and 2 private houses. The chalets are located far enough apart to provide privacy. Each one is designed differently and all are spacious with large 4 poster beds, en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water, flush toilets, showers hung from overhanging branches and bathtubs set in the rocks so you can lie back and relax as the sun goes down. The veranda has armchairs and a hammock.
The 2 private houses, Makolo and Songea, cater for families and groups of friends and offer a private escape ten minutes walk from the main lodge. You can use the facilities at the main lodge but will also have your own chef for private meals if preferred.
Nkwichi has a great variety of exciting and interesting activities on land and on the lake. There are various walking routes in the area around the lodge, bird watching walks are offered and you can visit Likoma Island, which has an interesting community and an historic cathedral. A visit to Manda Wilderness Reserve is a popular option for wildlife spotters. Swimming, snorkelling, canoeing and sailing are great ways to explore the lake. The lodge also has its own dhow, Miss Nkwichi, and arranged cruises. While here you should take advantage of the stunning 'Lake of Stars' starbed, set away from the lodge on a deserted beach or a private rock.
