Open: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is open all year.

Location: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is on the edge of the crater and there are stunning views from all rooms. The lodge is reached by a light aircraft flight to Make Manyara airstrip followed by a 2 hour drive.

Rooms: There are 3 separate camps, north, south and tree camp. Tree Camp is the smallest with 6 suites and is on the very edge of the crater. North Camp and South Camp have 12 suites each and are slightly higher up the hill. All have private butler service. Bedrooms and bathrooms have large windows and private balconies looking out over the crater. The accommodation is stylish and colourful, with chandeliers, wood-panelled walls and fireplaces.

Activities: The focus of activity is the Ngorongoro Crater and the lodge offers daily game drives with picnic lunches. You can enjoy private bush breakfasts and guided nature walks. The lodge arranges Maasai dancing displays. Trips to Olduvai Gorge can be organised.

Facilities: Each of the 3 camps has its own domed dining and living area lit by chandeliers with views of the crater through the windows. The décor is opulent with wood-pannelling, silk curtains and huge chandeliers. There are opportunities for outdoor dining on the deck where a fire is lit each evening for sundowners. You can buy curios, jewellery and leather goods in the shop. The lodge offers a laundry service.

Dining: Meals are taken at individual tables.

Children: Children over the age of 8 years are welcome.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is free Wi-Fi internet access and a computer you can use in the shop.

When we came back from our game drive, the butler had run a bubble bath with rose petals and left sherry and nibbles in our room. I still can't quite believe it!
