Mfangano Island Camp is located on the shores of Lake Victoria and is an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The island has just one road and no other hotels to disturb the peace. All the buildings are in the local Luo tribal style, with walls of smoothed mud and clay, roofs of thatch and banana leaf. The design keeps interiors cool and airy.

There are just nine guest cottages, all set close to the water's edge, decorated with local handicrafts and all with en-suite bathrooms. Each room has its own private veranda with sunbeds where you can relax in privacy and take in views of Lake Victoria and passing dhows. The cosy dining room and lounge are fanned by breezes from the lake. The cuisine is based on fresh local produce including fish from the lake and fruit and vegetables from the gardens. Meals are served in the gardens overlooking the lake and in the dining room.

During your stay you can go fishing and boating on the lake, which is also perfect for swimming. The birds and wildlife of the area are fascinating and you are welcome to join a guide on a walk in the vicinity of the camp. The local people are very friendly and you can visit local villages, many of which the camp supports through community projects. Other activities available include exploring the island by bike and visiting rock art sites.
