Mawamba Lodge

Costa Rica

Favourite place I have ever been to in the world - what more can I say. Beautiful setting, attentive staff, nature at its finest, the sea one side, the river the other, the giant iguanas, their very own Red Eyed tree frog breeding area, the lovely pool, the huge rooms in our beautiful chalet. The freshest fruit and coconut I have ever tasted. Luxury, relaxation, perfection .....

This may be a bit hard, as the hotel is miles from any roads, but the food was very average, as were the facilities.

Good location and wildlife. Food very disappointing; it was identical every day. There are no feeders in the grounds to attract the birds. Ok but would not return.

Loved the lodge, accommodation was great. It was amazing when we walked around the grounds, what you don't see!! From the bats clinging on to the mosquito net windows to the different plants outside our doors, iguanas in the tree's, frogs in the pond, etc. Eye opening. The guide on this trip was wonderful, a great character, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Very helpful with the clothing and footwear needed, always good to be well prepared. Everything here very well, organised! Staff sat us at the same table every day, for meals, with people well didn't know, fortunately we got along with the four people either side of us. Not too keen on eating with strangers but if was alright really.

Wonderful, having the bigger lodge excellent. Food fabulous, As river dry and transfer from San Jose took 8 hours extra water on coach would have been good.

A good destination and a lot of wild life to see from the rivers. A very large 'hotel' and managed trips and food well, although the latter was somewhat basic. The bar was poorly manned, often having to go to reception to get the barman! Well, twice!!!

We loved our stay here. Although the cabin was rustic it met our needs adequately and the setting was perfect. Set in beautiful gardens and fronting onto the waters edge it is home to so many birds and animals. Each morning we were woken early to the dawn chorus of the most amazing bird song especially from the Montezuma Oropendola. The organised trips were superb as well as the extra ones we did. The resort was beautifully laid out and the food and service were very good.

The location is amazing between the sea and river, lovely gardens with frog and butterfly houses. The rooms are a bit basic but comfortable, but we had not hot water, not even warm so when we had got wet in a downpour it wasn’t pleasant. Apparently nobody had any hot water!

The environment necessitates a certain basicness about the accommodation which we accept. I think all the Lodges were perhaps similar. Mawamba has the advantage of being situated so you can walk on the beach and to the village. Our cabin was clean. Running water was cold but in the heat this didn't matter. The only thing we didn't like much was the communal eating. Food average. The rainforest and hotel staff and guides were excellent and made up for the slight niggles

Arrive by boat ! Great buffet style meals with good selection. Basic room. Massive gardens with lots of different areas, could always find a quiet area around pool on beach or hammocks on dock! There are large Iguana wandering around! We did the garden tour with the guide very good defiantly recommend very informative. Butterfly and frog enclosures. Quite a large lodge, put onto shared table for all meals , which worked out fine for us.

Probably the best-run hotel I have ever stayed at. The boat transfer was arranged so that your luggage was there waiting for you, and check-in had already been done: all you had to do was wait for your name to be called, get your bag and go to your room. The food was excellent, the guides brilliant, the room comfortable, the pool a lovely place to relax. When we came to go back, the guide explained that there had been a road accident at the other end which had delayed the coach, so he thought that we'd rather hang about at the hotel in comfort than in discomfort at the transit point.

This was our least favorite accomodation of the trip really so glad it was the first. Plane transfer in was very good. Reception and management are hidden away and don't really appear. On arrival we met the tour leader assigned to the 39 people that arrived that day. It was a bit of a zoo with time hanging around waiting for them to split the group up into smaller units for some of the activities. The food was very good buffet style. We had a superior room but it wasn't obvious, still dark and hot, the fan was not over the bed so didn't give full benefit. Lovely pool and gardens with plenty of toucans and other wildlife easy to see. Paid for the extra morning bird spotting boat trip but were disappointed that it remained in the main river. They would not run the preferred kayak trip due to high water levels, although people from other places were doing it. Unfortunately there was heavy rain on the boat transfer out so we didn't see anything. The landing area was up a grassy bank with nowhere covered to wait, so we got onto the coach with suitcases and selves pretty soaked. We had not been pre-warned or given any assistance to get bags waterproofed, other than having to go to the office to request bin bags. So different at Corcovado, but I expect there is a big cost difference.

The accommodation at Mawamba Lodge, Torteguero felt authentic and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There was a huge variety of wildlife within the grounds, including iguana, monkeys, bats, frogs, humming birds.. the list just goes on and on. The standard of food was amazing and there was a really good selection to choose from. The river trips were lead by such a fantastic guide, Cinthia - we saw a huge range of wildlife and birds - we would highly recommend the early morning optional river cruise as we saw sloths, howler monkeys, spider monkeys and white faced capuchins - as well as so many birds, cameo, crocs and river turtles. This is a very special place and we cant recommend it enough.

The setting is amazing and the garden is beautiful. The cabin was a little basic in terms of lighting and sockets. The shower was hot in the morning but not the evening. Food choices in the evening were inadequate and people had to queue. Excursions were great, in small boats up and down the lagoon. The garden tour was also really good and very informative. Laura did a great job as guide and mentor.

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and our Guide Dennis was excellent and very knowledgeable. The food was simple but extremely good, healthy and tasty. We had the standard rooms and if we were to go back we would upgrade the rooms because although they were very clean and comfortable they were pretty basic.
