Open: Mateya Safari Lodge is open all year.
Location: The lodge is in the Gabbro hills in Madikwe Game Reserve. There is an airstrip in Madikwe about a 10 minute drive from the lodge. The lodge is about a 4.5 hour drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Rooms: Mateya accommodates a maximum of 10 guests in 5 air-conditioned suites. Each suite has a private deck with an infinity plunge pool with views of the waterhole and savannah. The en-suite bathroom has a full size bathtub, twin hand basins and is supplemented by a screened, open air shower. Dressing gowns are provided for every guest. Beds are equipped with mosquito nets and each bedroom has a sitting area with a fireplace.
Activities: You can go on game drives in customised 4x4 vehicles taking a maximum of 4 guests each, equipped with shade covers and side flaps, and with binoculars for close-up views and blankets in case of cold weather. Guided bush walks are a speciality at Mateya, led by a ranger and a tracker. There are over 350 species of birds in Madikwe, so bird watchers will be in their element.
Facilities: The lounge is a high ceilinged room with glass doors along the front wall that lead out to an expansive terrace. It is full of African artefacts and artworks. The library houses an impressive collection of African literature plus a plasma screen TV and DVD collection including wildlife films. Locally-made arts and crafts can be bought in the gift shop, and there’s an art gallery for guests to enjoy. Massages, body wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures and reflexology are offered at the spa. There is a small gym.
Dining: Meals are served in the dining room where there’s an open fire, and on the terrace where the campfire is lit after dark. The lodge has large collection of wines to accompany meals. The wine cellar makes a cosy and atmospheric veune for private meals.
Children: Children aged 9 years and over are welcome, unless the camp is booked for exclusive use when there no minimum age limit. Children aged 13 and under pay 50% when sharing a room with parents, maximum 1 child (13 or under) and 2 adults per suite. The minimum age for guided walks is 16 years.
Health: Madikwe is a malaria-free area.
Communication: Wi-Fi internet access is available in the bush boardroom.
