Mashpi Lodge

Northwest of Quito Ecuador

For bird and nature lovers alike, this is the place to visit. The last hour of the journey from Quito is on unmade roads and can be quite a bone-shaking experience. But it's all worth it once you arrive. THE FOREST IS GLORIOUS. The activities can be quite physical - there's quite a lot of energetic walking - but it's always rewarded by lovely views, exciting trails, and wildlife spotting. The rooms are fab - floor to ceiling windows. They host dozens of people every week (most people only stay two or three nights), but somehow they make the experience personal for each guest. The guides are so interesting, and experts at making sure you get to see everything before you leave. The food was delicious especially the buffet style breakfasts and lunches. Prepare to get very wet! However everything has been thought of: wellies and rain coats to borrow plus a drying service. The zip wire bike and dragonfly experiences were absolute highlights. The staff were all gracious, welcoming and helpful from the house keeping staff through the chef and waiters all the way up to the top. What a place....

Masphi Lodge was a brilliant experience!  Our luxurious bedroom made us feel totally immersed in the forest, the hotel facilities were excellent (I did manage to find time for a lovely relaxing herbal massage) and the staff were without exception professional, friendly and helpful.  The food in particular was delicious, and the wide selection of lovely fruit juices and smoothies were very welcome, particularly after some great - but often strenuous, due to the high humidity levels - treks with the knowledgeable and amazing guides (I had trouble finding some of the birds in the thick forest canopy, let alone being able to spot them in trees several hundred yards away, which the local guide managed easily!).  We were sorry to leave for our return journey to Quito - there were demonstrations taking place in Quito that day, so the staff delayed our departure slightly to ensure that they could deliver us safely to our hotel once the perceived threat was over.  You don't get that sort of service if you make your own travel arrangements!

The lodge was beautifully designed and furnished. The food was top class. The staff attentive and the rooms were clean, modern and very comfortable. The hotel provided water bottles and insect repellent for customers to use and keep and there were also robes and slippers for use in the hotel. The views from the room were spectacular and the fruit plate and constantly replenished juice were a welcome touch in the room.
