Location: Machaba Camp is in on the banks of the Khwai River in Khwai Concession in the eastern part of the Okavango Delta, across the river from Moremi Game Reserve. It is a 30-minute drive from Khwai airstrip.

Rooms: There are eight twin/double tents and two family tents, each with two bedrooms. Accommodation is very roomy, with a bedroom, sitting area and an en-suite bathroom as well as an outdoor shower. The water is heated by solar power. You are supplied with a selection of toiletries. Each tent has a private veranda facing the river, with chairs and a table. Tents are set beneath large trees which provide shade.

Activities: Machaba Camp offers twice-daily game drives, in the morning and evening plus night drives. You can also take guided bush walks (seasonal). Mokoro rides are available when the water levels permit. The camp can arrange visits to the local community, again dependent on water levels.

Facilities: There is a lounge tent, with large mesh windows for wildlife viewing and a second wing containing the dining tent. You are welcome to look through the collection of books. There is a swimming pool and a deck with loungers for sunbathing. In the evening the fire is lit at the front of the lounge tents and chairs are set up so you enjoy drinks and conversation around the fire. At night the camp is lit by lanterns. Spa treatments including massages and facials are available. There are facilities for charging batteries. There is a curio shop. The camp offers a laundry service.

Dining: Meals are taken communally with other guests, usually al fresco. Dinner is served by atmospheric candlelight.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. There are two family tents which can accommodate up to two adults and two children. A private game-viewing vehicle needs to be booked for families with children under the age of six years. The minimum age for mokoro rides and walking safaris is 12 years. The camp is unfenced and animals wander near the tents, so children must be kept under supervision at all times. It should be noted that there is no babysitting service.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication:
There is limited Wi-Fi internet access near the office.

Notes: Re disabled access, Machaba Camp is built on ground level and is wheelchair friendly. Two of the tents have railings in the toilet

Having elephants, hippos and other wildlife on your doorstep is an incredible experience. Having grown up with a lifetime of BBC documentaries I couldn’t believe how much we saw and how great our guide, Kitso, was at finding what was most interesting to us.
