Open: Lupita Island is open all year.

Location: Lupita Island is a private island of 44 hectares on Lake Tanganyika on Tanzania’s western border. The island is 5kms from the mainland. It is just under a 3-hour flight from the Serengeti. The nearest airstrip is at Kipili.

Rooms: There are 13 separate cottages including a family suite. They vary in size ranging from 1-bedroom cottages with 167 square metres of space to 2-bedroom cottages occupying 232sqm. Each has a lounge and bar, writing desk, en-suite facilities including a waterfall shower and an open-air bath, toiletries, hairdryer, and a terrace with a sun loungers and a plunge pool. The Livingstone suite can accommodate a family of up to 5 and guests staying here can have private meals in the suite. All guests have the services of a butler. Early morning tea and coffee can be delivered to your cottage. There is 24-hour electricity, though the supply cannot always be guaranteed. The maximum number of guest at Lupita is 28.

Activities: You can take part in watersports, go swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving in Lake Tanganyika. The resort has 2-man kayaks for guest use, and no fewer than 4 boats for leisurely cruises incorporating drinks and snacks. There are opportunities for fishing, on your own or with a local fisherman, on the lakeshore or by boat in the lake. You can go walking and hiking on the island and a neighbouring island. The village Kipili and the remains of the 19th century monastery nearby are worth a visit, and you can take a boat ride to another village where there’s a weekly market.

Facilities: These include a lounge and bar, restaurant (details below), a boma and a games room. There is an outdoor swimming pool, sun deck and pool bar, and a private beach and beach shack (bar). The resort has a spa and a gym set on the hillside. On certain days the Kipili local choir perform songs and dances at the resort. There is a laundry service.

Dining: The open-sided restaurant specialises in fish from the lake supplemented by other locally sourced ingredients. Dining is by candlelight after dark. Buffets and barbecues by the beach shack, bar snacks and private pool deck meals can be arranged.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. Some cottages are large enough to accommodate families.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is limited Wi-Fi internet access in communal areas. There is mobile phone coverage.

Notes: The island can be hired for exclusive use.
Payment by debit and credit cards can be problematic, so cash is recommended for personal spending at Lupita Island.
