We enjoyed the beautiful setting and gardens and our cabin with the front and rear porch, lovely views of the volcano and a walk from the grounds. We did have issues with the shower, which made showering an interesting event (too hot or too cold) neither of us could work it out, but this wasn't too serious.

Cannot fault this hotel. Lodges are excellent, the property layout is spacious and well thought out for views and not being overlooked, and the staff were great. The on-site forest trail is well worth a visit - less manicured than some of the 'official' National Park trails that are used by the guides, and you can take as long a you like to soak up the atmosphere, see the volcano and watch the amazing range of wildlife.

The hotel is in a great location, close to Fortuna so easy to access by taxi. Our cabin was really nice, good air con and great bathroom. There are excellent views of the volcano. Pool and jacuzzi were good. The restaurant was classy with good food. The outdoor terrace was lovely for lunch or breakfast. The private nature trail was tough but worth walking. Spotted some toucans.

We were very lucky to arrive on a day when the volcano was fully visible as we learnt that it can often be covered by cloud. We thought that our lodge was one of the best on the site with uninterrupted views of the volcano and a great place to sit on the veranda and birdwatch. We saw more birds here than on the guided walks and had our own hummingbird feeding nearby every evening. The pool area was comfortable and the jacuzzi was the hottest we've ever been in, covered and great for sheltering from the rain showers. The sports bar had a relaxed atmosphere and good food to accompany the happy hour drinks.

Lomas del Volcan at Arenal was a truly magical place and the accommodation was beautiful. Our room was immaculate and staff were incredibly friendly and hard working. We had upgraded to a deluxe bungalow with a bath tub on the terrace which had possibly the best view of the volcano and surrounding forest. You can literally waste hours watching the huge range of birds that surround you. Breakfast was good, and staff in the bar were very friendly - happy hour was very good value. We ate one evening in the restaurant and although a bit pricey the food was of a very high standard indeed. One word of warning - the hotel's nature trail was very overgrown and quite hard to navigate - we were fine but it was quite a surprise!!

Very comfortable accommodation in lovely gardens. The restaurant was a bit disappointing, seeming a little too international when we wanted more Costa Rican cuisine. However the food served at the bar was more authentic and very good. Although the hotel has a superb location with views of the volcano, it is some way from the nearest town, which limits options.

Great location and again excellent room/lodge. Lovely gardens and great pool. Food good but went out to La Fortuna one night. $6 taxi each way. La Fortuna a bit touristy but they are there for a reason. The surrounding area was very good with walks, hot springs and good wildlife. We had our first good view of sloths (and their babies) Even managed to see the top of the active volcano from the hotel. Normally covered in cloud.

The accommodation was excellent and breakfast was good. However, we did not like the restaurant, which we thought was overpriced, pretentious and had very poor service. We ate here on the first night, but on some other nights we ate in the bar area, where the menu was more to our liking and service was good. We thought that the location of the hotel was too remote from the town centre, there was a one km walk along a rough track to the main road, involving the crossing of a ford, making it necessary for us to get our feet wet! it was then a further 3+km into town. The hotel did provide a taxi service into town at a cost of 6usd each way, but we prefer to walk where possible.

Modern high-standard hotel with beautifully maintained grounds at the foot of the stunning Arenal Volcano. This appears to be the centre for activities in Costa Rica and you could easily make this the base for a one or two week stay. One downside is the hotel is over 1km from the main road and it would not be easy or desirable to walk out of the hotel to other places at night, there is also an overflowing lake to navigate along the roadway. Lots of wildlife can be viewed from the rooms, pool and restaurant. The hotel is very smart but appears to be oriented towards American tourists as it seems to be styled on the higher grade hotels to be found outside the big cities of the USA, not my personal taste but I'm sure it will appeal to many. Food OK but not to the level you might expect given the general appearance. Very steep driveway to our room, it would not have suited someone with impaired mobility but presumably the hotel would handle this if required. There was construction work in progress to add additional bungalows to the estate. It didn't bother us other than disturbing the peace but might offend some, especially if staying closer than the 150 yards or so that we were. There is a nice pool and jacuzzi with unimpaired views of the volcano

Beautiful hotel, gounds and rooms. Appreciated the air conditioning, such a treat after Tortuguero. Unfortunately heavy rain for most of the stay means we could not appreciate the views from our room and the hotel restaurant and didn't use the pool. We still saw plenty of birds in the grounds though, including toucans. We loved the happy hour in the open-air bar and our friendly, flexible bar man. Food in the hotel was very good, and because it was quiet even the breakfast was a-la-carte except for our last morning. Roberto on reception was very helpful. Walked into Arenal town and got a taxi back.Be warned, it was dearer than the hotel for beers! Only minor gripe, was that we did a hike into Juan Castro Blanco National Park with a guide organised by the hotel. It was a good day out but not quite what was advertised on the website or room info. with less bird life than expected. However we paid for a group trip but had the guide for just the two of us. Should have stuck to a Tribes organised hike maybe! H

What an amazing location and lovely setting in view of the volcano and the forest. Unfortunately, throughout our stay the cloud did not rise enough for us to see the volcano and it rained for most of the time. The hotel was well set out and modern. The restaurant had a fantastic view of, what were told was a volcano, through a massive window. If the cloud had risen, we would have had a treat! The food was average: standard Costa Rican breakfast fare which was included in our deal, but the evening meal service was poor and the food uninspiring. The location of the hotel was great being in forest surroundings with the volcano as a backdrop, but it was too far away from the town, La Fortuna, to walk there. On our final night we took a taxi for a meal at La Parrilla De Maria which was very good and gave us an insight into the local community. We paid £40 each for two course and drinks. We stayed in a “lodge” about 200 yards from the reception and dining facilities. It was an innovative idea in being able to see the volcano one direction and the forest in the opposite. It was well equipped and very comfortable. The short walk on the edge of the hotel grounds was interesting. Had we taken this walk after our tour to see the mountain up close, when we came across a Pit Viper (poisonous snake), we may have been more careful of what we were treading on! The tours we took were great and included: 1. The Arenal Hanging Bridges where and a few bridges Ali overcame her fear of them and complete the 15 without trauma! It was good to see the forest canopy from above. 2. Don Juan coffee and chocolate: it was very interesting to see how the famous coffee is grown and processed. 3. We had to undertake the guided hike to the volcano in a thunderstorm! The guide was very informative, but the weather prevented enjoyment of this outing. We crossed the lake in driving rain, staggered up to a lookout in thunder and lightning and proceeded to climb the lower slopes of lava in more heavy rain. This is where we saw the Pit Viper. 4. Ecotermales hot springs has an excellent set up with pools to laze in which increased in temperature from 36.5 to 40.5 degrees C 5. Zip wires where Ali not only conquered her fears again but was also really enjoying it when we got to the 16th and final ride! It was very safe having two support cables, effective safety mechanisms and procedures and well organised and trained staff. Having returned to the news of the fatalities in the New Zealand volcano I would be reluctant to stay that close to a live volcano again.

On arrival we were allocated a bungalow which was having a few new bungalows built at the rear- hence we were sitting on the patio watching men working ( not ideal!). The hotel rectified this and the next morning moved us- good service, (but why allocate the initial bungalow in the first place when they had options?) Notwithstanding this " hiccup", the rest of our stay went very well. The food was good, the al la carte breakfast was good and they had a nice open air bar area. Taxis to/ from La Fortuna are easy and cheap and a walk into town is do-able ( take a brolly/ coat!)

However our v nice cabin was situated on the edge of the hotel against the rainforest (good trail through) and we loved sitting on the balcony with good views to watch the many birds and monkeys passing by

Lovely restaurant building with floor to ceiling glazing giving fantastic views of the volcano. Great breakfasts, we had lunch twice - lunch in the bar v nice and good happy hour. Thumbs up • Location : A stunning resort in a really beautiful location with wonderful views of the volcano. • Staff : Incredibly helpful, professional & friendly staff. • Food : Lovely food and enough breakfast to fill you up for the whole day. • Getting around : Around a 20 minute walk from the lodges to the nearest supermarket & bars. Due to the distance along an unlit track from the main road it's not advisable to walk after dark. Plus it's all uphill. It’s also close enough to La Fortuna for a cheap taxi ride back and well placed in the area for the local trips and tours. Thumbs down • If it’s not broken, then don’t fix it. In all honesty there is nothing that I would change about Lomas del Volcan.

This was our favourite place to stay because we really liked the bungalow style of the hotel where we had lots of outdoor space with two vervandas. There was a lot of wildlife especially birds always around the hotel so it was nice to relax on the vervanda and watch the birds and take in the view of the volcano. The staff were all really friendly and helpful and the resturant was nice and we enjoyed the buffet style breakfast, we also ate several meals there which were all good. The rooms themselves were nice, clean and spacious, especially the bathroom! The pool was lovely although a little cold so took a little time to get in! Overall we really enjoyed our stay here.

Good view of the cloud-topped volcano from the room. Delightful gardens and minibus access to La Fortuna only a 10-minute drive. Food excellent. Nice local 'street' food in the town, with very attractive public square. Wine quite expensive, but this was universal throughout the country as almost all is imported from Argentina. Personally this was my favourite hotel. Luckily we were upgraded so we had a spa bath on our balcony and also an uninterrupted view of the volcano and the forest. We could see some monkeys and a sloth. The grounds were beautiful as well. The hotel is obviously on the route of some coach tours and we had large groups arriving daily.
